We get that this will be seen as a controversial pick. Still, hear us out. Based on our opening-night Howl-O-Scream 2026 experience at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, we had to put Raven’s Mill: Lambs to the Slaughter in this spot.

Raven’s Mill made a strong first impression in 2025 as a brand-new house, and it returns for 2026 with the Lambs to the Slaughter storyline largely unchanged from last year. The wooden textures, backwoods villains, and rural farmhouse atmosphere still work, and the outdoor sections still give this house a different feel than anything else in the lineup, since the fresh air and open sky sections genuinely change the pacing of the scares.

The queue setup looked different this year. That new arrangement gave Howl-O-Scream more space to work with. This house uses some outdoor area for the scares. That can be a good or bad thing depending on how the evening weather goes. More importantly, the new queue system does not work well. Yes, they have more space to add outdoor sets. Still, the queue system fails to lead to guest satisfaction, and the new set pieces do not add very much.

Two Runs!

Our first run through this house was, in a word…AWFUL! So, we tried again later in the evening. That visit to Raven’s Mill was better, but the new setup fails to bring the scares and the experience is not as good as the many times we went through this house last year.

The downside of a largely unchanged storyline is that a house which felt novel a year ago now plays more like a known quantity. Guests who did Raven’s Mill in 2025 will find themselves anticipating scares rather than being surprised by them, which is exactly the trap that caught up to some of the other returning houses last year. It’s still a decent entry, and newcomers will love it, but without new story beats to hang new scares on, it settles into the bottom of our Howl-O-Scream Busch Gardens Tampa haunted house rankings 2026 instead of climbing higher.

#5 Stranglewood Estate

How can a house that has been at Howl-O-Scream so long that you wonder if dinosaurs were roaming the earth when it was first designed be ahead of Raven’s Mill? Even though this house still has issues with sections lacking scare actors and scares, the new RePosessed narrative makes the house slightly better.

Stranglewood Estate returns for another year, this time under the RePossessed banner, with a new storyline centered on a séance gone recklessly wrong inside the old mansion. The bones of the house are exactly what you remember: gothic architecture, tight corridors, and set design that still rewards a slow walk-through more than a sprint to the exit. The new séance framing gives the actors a fresh excuse for their menace, and a few scenes clearly got reworked to lean into it.

That said, this is the same building we’ve walked through for years, and by now, seasoned Howl-O-Scream veterans have seen most of its tricks. A new storyline can change the mood of a scene, but it can’t change the floor plan, and Stranglewood’s floor plan is well known to repeat guests at this point. It’s a classic, but with six houses now competing for attention, and five of them sharing the same trait of being returning builds with new paint on the story, Stranglewood’s version of that formula is the least surprising of the bunch. #4 Circus of Fear: Killer Encore

The big top is back for a third year, now billed as Killer Encore, with a storyline built around a murdered ringmaster and a troupe of performers left completely unchecked. It’s a fun excuse for the cast to get a little wilder than usual, and on opening night, the energy was noticeably higher than in years past. The creepy clowns, warped carnival music, and sideshow gags still land, especially for guests who haven’t done this house before.

For returning fans, though, the missing-ringmaster twist mostly reshuffles who’s chasing you rather than reinventing what the house is. The set pieces and layout seemed unchanged. So, by the fourth consecutive year with this concept, the surprises are fewer than they once were. It’s a good time, and the cast deserves credit for selling the new chaos-without-a-leader angle, but Circus of Fear needed more than a missing ringmaster and an Italian Opera singer in charge to climb higher in our Howl-O-Scream Busch Gardens Tampa haunted house rankings 2026.

#3 M.A.R.S.

This is where there is a clear distinction in terms of quality. The previous three houses failed to match the top three, at least on opening night.

M.A.R.S. is officially back as a returning favorite this year with no new storyline framing attached to it, which is a notable choice given that every other returning house got some version of a refreshed narrative for 2026. The sci-fi setting is still one of the most visually distinct builds Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has ever attempted, and the low-light, funhouse-meets-spacecraft design still separates it from the gothic mansions and sideshow tents elsewhere on the loop.

#2 Shadows of Wonderland: Reign of Madness

Shadows of Wonderland held the top spot in both our 2024 and 2025 rankings, and for its third consecutive year, it’s back with a genuinely new angle: Reign of Madness, in which Alice herself becomes the new Queen of Wonderland after dragging the old Queen away for execution. After that, she promptly turns just as tyrannical as the monarch she replaced. It’s a smart twist on a story fans already know from this house, and it recontextualizes familiar rooms and set pieces in a way that feels earned rather than tacked on.

The set design remains some of the most detailed anywhere in the event, from the oversized playing cards to the twisted royal chambers. The narrative through-line still keeps this house feeling cohesive from start to finish in a way most haunts don’t bother attempting. Reign of Madness is, story for story, the strongest rework among this year’s five returning houses.

However, the rework does not improve this house much. Sure, it is a more significant change, which we like. Yet, the previous storyline made more sense with the set pieces.

It’s still a must-do, and in most years, Alice’s new reign of terror would have been enough to keep it at #1. This year, it just ran into a house we liked even more. That’s why Shadows of Wonderland lands at #2 in our Howl-O-Scream Busch Gardens Tampa haunted house rankings for 2026, a step down in ranking but not in quality.

Howl-O-Scream Rankings 2026: #1 Anaconda: Fear Has No Escape

For the first time in Howl-O-Scream history, an original storytelling approach shares the lineup with a licensed film property, and Anaconda: Fear Has No Escape earns the top spot in our Howl-O-Scream Busch Gardens Tampa haunted house rankings 2026.
