Twisted Tails Ham and Cheese Sandwich Review: The Seven-Minute Wait That Took 22 Minutes at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

We tried a new menu item at Twisted Tails Pretzels at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. How was the Twisted Tails Ham Sandwich? For that information, you will have to wait…just like we did for this sandwich.

A special kind of optimism exists only inside a theme park quick-service restaurant. It sounds like this: “It will be about a seven-minute wait.” When you hear those words from a theme park employee, things may be about to go very wrong!
For the record, it was not a seven-minute wait. It was a 22-minute wait. For a sandwich…and a bag of chips. We have had shorter waits for Iron Gwazi, and Iron Gwazi at least gives you a 206-foot drop for your trouble.
Twisted Tails Pretzels at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has quietly added hot sandwiches to its menu board, including a new Ham & Cheese sandwich for $13.99. We stopped by one evening to try it. The sandwich was fine. The process of getting the sandwich was a sitcom. Here is everything you need to know before you order.
What Is Twisted Tails Pretzels at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay?
Twisted Tails Pretzels is a quick bites location in the Pantopia area of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The park lists it as a pretzel-and-beer spot with outdoor seating, serving savory and sweet pretzels alongside draft beer, wine, and other drinks. It is also listed as a participating location for the All-Day Dining Deal.
Think of it as the place you grab a pretzel dog between coasters. That is the job description. The hot sandwiches are a newer side hustle.
The Online Menu Does Not Match the Actual Menu (As Usual)
If you check the official Twisted Tails page before your visit, you will find jumbo pretzels, a jumbo cinnamon sugar pretzel, a pizza pretzel, a pretzel dog, pretzel bites, dipping sauces, caramel corn, cotton candy, and drinks. What you will not find are prices, the combo, or either hot sandwich.
That has become something of a United Parks tradition. The website menu and the menu board are distant cousins who only see each other at Thanksgiving (maybe). So here is the actual menu board from our visit.

Twisted Tails Pretzels Menu and Prices
| Item | Details | Price |
| Signature Pretzels | Pizza Pretzel or Pretzel Dog | $13.99 |
| Combo | Pretzel Dog plus a bag of chips | $15.99 |
| Standard Pretzels | Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel or Salted Pretzel | $11.99 |
| Pretzel Bites | Cinnamon Pretzel Bites or Salted Pretzel Bites | $11.99 |
| Hot Turkey & Cheese | Sliced turkey and bacon, Swiss cheese, leaf lettuce, and tomato on a soft brioche bun with Ken’s Honey Mustard dressing; served with a bag of chips | $13.99 |
| Hot Ham & Cheese | Sliced ham and Swiss cheese, leaf lettuce, and tomato on a soft brioche bun with Ken’s Honey Mustard dressing; served with a bag of chips | $13.99 |
| Assorted Chips | Bag of chips | $5.79 |
| Dipping Sauces | Cheese Sauce, Cream Cheese Icing, Marinara, Pub Mustard | $2.49 |
Prices are from the menu board during our visit, and tax is added to all purchases. Note that the board shows the All-Day Dining Deal badge next to the pretzels, pretzel bites, and combo, but not next to the two hot sandwiches. We did not use the All-Day Dining Plan during this visit. Thus, we cannot confirm that the new sandwiches are part of it. However, based on the price point, we suspect there are.
Ordering at Twisted Tails: A Comedy in Several Acts

Twisted Tails uses ordering kiosks. To be fair, when the stand is slow, the kiosks work great. OK, the ones that are operating work great. You tap, you pay, you get a receipt with a number, and you get a pretzel. Lovely.
When the stand is busy, the system falls apart faster than a poorly made pretzel bite in a puddle of cheese sauce. Here is why:
- Many guests are not familiar with the kiosks. So the line moves at the speed of “wait, how do I go back?”
- Ambassadors still have to collect receipts from guests. The kiosk is supposed to streamline things, yet a human still needs your paper slip.
- Not every guest knows they need to turn in the receipt. Many assume their number will be called, so they wait patiently for an order that technically does not exist yet.
- Once the ambassador takes your receipt, you have to remember your number. Your proof of purchase is now gone, and your order number lives only in your memory. We were asked for our number three separate times.
- The space is small. Twisted Tails’ interior gets crowded quickly, and a crowd of confused guests holding phones and kids makes every problem above worse.
Our Comical Experience
Our experience was almost comical. After handing over our receipt, we were repeatedly asked for our number and what we ordered. It started to feel less like a quick-service restaurant and more like a game show where the grand prize is ham. Once they actually started our order, it took only a few minutes. The bigger issue was that orders like ours were being missed and skipped because the system has no reliable way to track who is waiting for what.
The ambassadors were doing their best inside a process that is working against them. This is an operations problem, not a people problem. Also, our actual 22-minute wait was from the time we made it to the pick-up counter and turned in our precious receipt.
Pro tip: Take a photo of your receipt before you hand it over. You will be asked for that number. Possibly several times.
Twisted Tails Ham and Cheese Sandwich Review

Hot Ham & Cheese at Twisted Tails Pretzels. Photo by Jon Self
The Twisted Tails Ham & Cheese is listed as a hot sandwich: sliced ham and Swiss cheese with lettuce and tomato on a soft brioche bun, finished with Ken’s Honey Mustard dressing, plus a bag of chips. At $13.99, it is priced the same as the Hot Turkey & Cheese, which also includes bacon. File that away for later.
The bun was decent. It is a shiny, soft brioche that holds up well and does the job without falling apart.
The ham was also decent. It is standard sliced deli ham, folded into a stack. No complaints, no fireworks.
The tomato and lettuce did their part. One thick tomato slice and some chopped roma pieces. The menu says “leaf lettuce,” and what showed up looked more like chopped pieces scattered across the top, but it was crisp, and nobody is filing a complaint over lettuce taxonomy.
Why the Struggle with Cheese at United Parks?
The cheese is where things slid downhill. The sandwich sits in a warmer, which melts the cheese into a glossy blanket over the ham. Visually, that works. Flavor-wise, it tasted like the standard, below-average United Parks cheese we have encountered at plenty of other counters. We do like that Twisted Tails went with Swiss on paper, since that is a nice step up from a plain American slice. In practice, the warmer seems to flatten whatever personality the Swiss was supposed to bring.
The honey mustard adds a little tang and sweetness, and you can see it drizzled on the top bun and across the greens in our photos. It helps more than the cheese does.
Twisted Tails Ham Sandwich Portion Size: Let’s Look at the Photos

Look closely at the closed sandwich shot. The brioche bun is doing a lot of the visual heavy lifting. It is a tall, round, glossy bun, and the ham and cheese peek out from underneath like they are hiding from the camera. Slide the bun aside in the open-faced photo, and you see a respectable fold of ham, a sheet of melted cheese, and a scattering of lettuce. It is a decent-sized sandwich. It is not a deli tower, and you will not need to unhinge your jaw.

With the bag of chips, it is a reasonable light lunch or an evening snack between coasters. Hungry teenagers and anyone coming off a full day in the Florida heat will probably be looking for something else within the hour.
Is the Twisted Tails Ham Sandwich a Good Use of the All-Day Dining Deal?
Twisted Tails is a participating All-Day Dining Deal location. That does not make it a good use of your plan.
First, the price. The All-Day Dining Deal has increased to $64.99 for adults (ages 10 and up), and the child price (ages 3 to 9) is $34.99, per the park’s listing. That is as five-dollar increase/
Here is how the plan works, according to Busch Gardens:
- Each visit includes one entrée, one dessert, and one fountain soft drink
- You can use it once every 90 minutes through the published closing time
- Child plans cover kids’ meal entrées only
- Park admission is required and is not included
- Sharing is prohibited, and it is not valid for alcohol, souvenir items, or bottled water
- The All-Day Dining Deal is not valid during Howl-O-Scream
- Participating locations: Zagora Café, Zambia Smokehouse, Dragon Fire Grill & Pub, Oasis Pizza, BG Cuban Café, SheiKra Eats, The Wild Tortilla, and Twisted Tails Pretzels
Twisted Tails Ham Sandwich: They Told Me There Would Be No Math! (Sorry About That)
Now the math. The most expensive entrées on the Twisted Tails board top out at $15.99, and the standard pretzels and pretzel bites are $11.99. Meanwhile, two neighboring plan locations charge noticeably more per entrée: street tacos at The Wild Tortilla run $17.99 to $18.99, and the Pick One Orange Chicken at Dragon Fire Grill was $19.49 on our last visit. If you are paying $64.99 for the day, every swipe at Twisted Tails is a swipe you could have spent on a bigger, pricier meal a short walk away.
The menu board detail mentioned earlier is also worth noting. The All-Day Dining badge appears next to the pretzels, bites, and combo, but not next to the hot sandwiches. If you want the Ham & Cheese on the plan, confirm at the kiosk or with an ambassador before you pay.
Our advice: Treat Twisted Tails as a snack stop. If you have the plan and you just want a quick pretzel between rides, fine. However, do not burn a meal slot here when tacos or a full plate of orange chicken is waiting next door.
Twisted Tails Neighbors: The Wild Tortilla and Dragon Fire Grill

One of the best things about Twisted Tails is its location. It sits in Pantopia, the same area as two other All-Day Dining locations. If the pretzel stand line looks like a Black Friday doorbuster, you have options nearby.
The Wild Tortilla took over the former Tot Topia spot in Pantopia and serves street tacos with esquites, nachos, guacamole, elote, and churros. Its tacos are included on the All-Day Dining Deal per the park, and three corn tortilla tacos plus esquites is a much better value swipe than a pretzel. This dining location is rarely busy. In fact, we often find it closed just like on this day. We would have dined at Wild Tortilla on this day instead of Twisted Tails Pretzel if given the chance.
Dragon Fire Grill & Pub is the big indoor food court in Pantopia with four stations covering Italian, burgers, chicken, and Asian dishes. It also has air conditioning, which in Tampa counts as a menu item. Our latest Dragon Fire Orange Chicken review found the Pick One a step in the right direction, as long as you get the fried rice instead of the noodles.
Put simply, Twisted Tails is Pantopia’s appetizer. The Wild Tortilla and Dragon Fire Grill are the entrées.
Can New Leadership Fix the Ordering Problem?
We hope so. Brian Bacica is returning as president of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island, and United Parks highlighted his background in attractions, hospitality, and food and beverage. A food-and-beverage background is exactly what Twisted Tails needs. The kiosks are not the problem. The handoff between kiosk, receipt, ambassador, and kitchen is. A simple order status screen (or just calling numbers out loud) would solve most of what we saw.
However, the mobile kiosks were put in place during Bacica’s first run as Busch Gardens Park President. In fact, he showed them to us. We pointed out some issues, which he admitted were true during his first run at park president. We have not spoken with him about the mobile kiosks since then.
Twisted Tails Pretzels: What to Know Before You Go

- Seating: Outdoor

- Pretzels: $11.99 standard, $13.99 signature, $15.99 pretzel dog combo

Twisted Tails Ham Sandwich: Nice Addition But Not Life Changing

The Twisted Tails Ham and Cheese sandwich is perfectly decent. The bun is fine, the ham is fine, the tomato and lettuce show up for work, and the honey mustard adds some life. The cheese is the weak link, melting in the warmer into that familiar, forgettable United Parks flavor, despite the promising choice of Swiss. The portion is decent, but nothing great.
The bigger story is the wait. A sandwich that takes a few minutes to make should not take 22 minutes to reach your hands. Until Twisted Tails fixes the gap between the kiosk and the counter, go during a slow period, keep a photo of your number handy, and save your All-Day Dining swipes for The Wild Tortilla or Dragon Fire Grill. If someone tells you it will be a seven-minute wait, smile, nod, and maybe go ride something first.
