If you’ve ever scrolled Disney food posts at 11 a.m. while planning your next Walt Disney World trip, chances are Boma – Flavors of Africa has already appeared on your radar. Located inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Boma’s breakfast buffet has built a reputation that borders on legendary, equal parts comforting, adventurous, and surprisingly approachable.

Unlike many Disney breakfast spots that lean heavily into character dining or basic pastries, Boma does something different. It blends familiar breakfast staples with African-inspired flavors, all served in a lively, market-style atmosphere that feels worlds away from the theme parks. From the moment you step inside, the aromas alone suggest this isn’t just another hotel buffet.

So does the hype still hold up? We recently conducted a Boma breakfast review to assess whether this fan-favorite buffet still deserves its praise and whether it’s worth planning a morning around.

Boma Breakfast Review: A Little More Adventurous Buffet

Boma Breakfast Review

If you’re after a breakfast that starts your Walt Disney World day with something a little more adventurous than the usual bacon-eggs-Mickey-waffle combo, Boma — Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of those rare resort meals that feels like a mini-vacation inside your vacation. It’s a buffet, yes, but it’s a buffet with personality: bold African flavors mixed with familiar breakfast comforts, a warm, market-style dining room, and more than a few surprises that’ll keep you going back for second (and third) plates.

Boma Breakfast Review

Below you’ll find an account of our experiences for this Boma breakfast review. We have visited several times in the last few months. Our Boma breakfast review will focus primarily on a recent visit. However, this review will also include details from other visits to create a well-rounded Boma breakfast review and dining resource. This resource will discuss what’s worth ordering, what to skip, how the service and atmosphere stack up, and whether the price is actually justified.

Disney’ Animal Kingdom Lodge

Boma Breakfast Review

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a unique deluxe resort at Walt Disney World, designed to immerse guests in the beauty and culture of Africa. The resort is most famous for its four sprawling savannas that surround the two main buildings, Jambo House and Kidani Village. More than 200 animals, including giraffes, zebras, gazelles, and ostriches, roam these outdoor habitats, visible from dedicated public viewing areas and many Savanna View rooms. The architecture is stunning, featuring a magnificent, towering lobby inspired by traditional African lodges, complete with the largest collection of African art in the United States.

Dining is a major draw, with award-winning African-inspired restaurants like Jiko – The Cooking Place (Signature Dining), Boma – Flavors of Africa (All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Buffet), and Sanaa (known for its Indian-style Bread Service with nine dips). It’s a destination in itself, offering cultural programs, animal specialists, a large feature pool with a slide, and a tranquil, immersive atmosphere that sets it apart from all other Disney resorts. As with this Boma breakfast review, we love visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Overview

Boma—Flavors of Africa table service restaurant serves breakfast and dinner buffets. It boasts a family-friendly buffet with an African flair. Boma—Flavors of Africa (commonly just called “Boma”) is in the Jambo House section at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge on the first floor of the main building.

Guests will encounter a large dining room resembling an open-air African marketplace with thatched-roof style ceilings. Of course, Walt Disney World visitors will receive the most outstanding care at Boma.

Most of the tables are located in the ample open dining space. Sturdy wood characterizes the tables and chairs. Just outside the dining area, guests will find several buffet stations. These contain an array of food choices.

Boma serves breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with the last reservation spot being at 11:15 a.m. on most days. However, we have gotten advance dining reservations later than that on some occasions. The dinner buffet runs from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Boma does not offer lunch. Advance dining reservations are highly recommended. Guests can use the MouseDining service to help with reservations or try to get a table on the day via the walk-up list in My Disney Experience.

Boma Breakfast Review: Pricing

Boma – Flavors of Africa accepts the Disney Dining Plan. It also offers a 10% discount for Disney Visa cardholders and Walt Disney World annual passholders. The breakfast buffet costs $39 per adult, plus tax and gratuity. It costs $23 per child (ages three to nine), plus tax and gratuity.

Those prices include Boma’s version of POG (Passion fruit, Orange, and Guava) juice and a choice of tea, coffee, or a soft drink. Guests can purchase breakfast cocktails, cold brews, and other beverages at an additional cost.

Boma Breakfast Review: Service & Dietary Accommodations

Boma Breakfast Review

One of the brighter notes about our recent Boma experiences is how the staff handles dietary restrictions. Gluten-free and dairy-free diners report that chefs will walk them through the buffet, mark safe items, and in some cases prepare off-buffet special items (tofu scramble, vegan Mickey waffles) to accommodate allergies or preferences. The chef’s involvement feels genuine. They don’t just point and leave; they often explain what’s safe and what can be modified. That level of attention matters, especially at a buffet where cross-contact can be a concern.

Service at Boma is generally relaxed and helpful. Cast members greet you warmly, clear plates without hovering, and refill drinks promptly. The restaurant can be busy, so expect the occasional wait for a table during peak times, but the host team manages the flow as well as possible.

All Walt Disney World restaurants, especially the table-service ones, offer excellent options for those with allergy concerns. Guests with allergy concerns will receive a guide indicating which buffet items are good ideas and which are not. Depending on the allergy, they may receive their own pastries to avoid the sweet temptations at the breakfast buffet.

Arrival & First Impressions — The Theming Wins You Over

Walk into Boma, and you immediately understand the “Flavors of Africa” part isn’t just menu lip service. The dining room is expansive and lively, with huge columns wrapped in woven textures, fabric panels that hang from the ceiling like colorful sails, and wooden accents that feel handcrafted. The overall effect is warm and busy in the right way, like stepping into a bustling marketplace in the best sense. Large windows let in natural light in the morning, and the seating areas vary (booths, community tables, small tables), which helps the place feel less like a buffet-cafeteria and more like a destination.

Boma’s design is authentic without being precious; the colors, fabrics, and decor are vibrant yet comfortable. The layout funnels you naturally toward the buffet stations while the seating nooks still feel intimate enough for conversation. In short: the setting sets the mood — you’re not just grabbing fuel for the theme parks, you’re taking a moment to savor the morning.

Boma Breakfast Review: Accessibility & Family Friendliness

Boma is family-friendly in the classic Walt Disney World sense: high chairs and booster seating are available. The buffet has many kid-friendly options (Mickey waffles, pancakes, and bacon), and the environment is lively rather than formal. Families with picky eaters will appreciate the balance between familiar comfort foods and opportunities to encourage kids to try something new without pressure.

Wheelchair access and wider aisles through seating and buffet areas make navigation manageable for most guests. If you have specific accessibility needs, call ahead or ask the host team. They are used to accommodating a wide range of requests.

Our Check in at Boma

Boma Breakfast Review

Like most table-service restaurants at Walt Disney World, guests must make an advance dining reservation. Once they arrive at their scheduled dining time, they will check in using the My Disney Experience mobile app. After this is done, guests will receive either a push notification or a text message that their table is ready. Once called, the guests will move to a staging area. After that, a host or hostess will seat them at a table.

During our most recent visit to Boma – Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we arrived early for our 11:25 a.m. advanced dining reservation. Guests can check in 20 minutes early on the mobile app.

Since this was a weekend visit, we expected Boma to be crowded. We were correct in this assessment. The waiting area for Boma (and the nearby Jiko) is not very large. Since it is at the bottom of the stairs, guests often pass through this area on their way elsewhere. This can lead to congestion. Guests should expect dining at Boma to be busier at times.

We were seated at 11:46 a.m. for our meal. The hostess took us to our table. Soon after, our server arrived to explain the process and take drink orders. One member of our party had an allergy concern. The server wanted to ensure allergy concerns and questions were addressed. During this time, the server promoted the Butterscotch Bread Pudding at the end of the buffet. They also mentioned that the Boma breakfast buffet contains 75 items for diners to try.

Boma Breakfast Buffet Options

Boma Breakfast Review
Sticky Buns and Bread Pudding

According to the Walt Disney World website, Boma – Flavors of Africa offers the following buffet items:

  • Assorted Pastries
  • Pancakes
  • Waffles
  • Breakfast Potatoes
  • Bacon and Sausage
  • Seasonal Bread Pudding
  • Carved Ham
  • Coconut Steel-cut Oatmeal
  • Turkey Bobotie
  • Omelets (Ham and Swiss | Western with Ham, Peppers, Onions, Cheddar | Cheese)
  • Cinnamon Rolls
  • Sticky Buns
  • Deviled Eggs with Smoked Salmon
  • Composed Yogurt Parfait
  • Avocado, Papaya, Grapefruit Salad
  • Ancient Grain Berry Salad
  • Oven-roasted Turkey
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Oak-grilled Tomatoes
  • Oak-grilled Asparagus

In fairness, the Walt Disney World website indicates that this is only a partial list. Still, the variety of unique items can make this a brunch-style meal, especially if you book an advanced dining reservation after 10:30 a.m.

The Buffet Layout — Organized, Abundant, and Tempting

Boma Breakfast Review

Boma’s buffet is arranged into clearly labeled islands and stations. During our recent visit, there were pastry and bread stations, hot griddle items (pancakes/waffles), protein and carve stations (ham and other carved meats), hot African specialties, side dishes (potatoes, steamed vegetables), and a dessert/pastry area that’s dangerously close to the coffee lineup. The arrangement is thoughtful, with pastries near the coffee, hot items grouped so steam and heat are contained, and a separate area for unique African items that invite curious sampling.

Two practical notes that matter: plates are large (so you can load up without looking like you’ve stolen cutlery), and the staff keep the stations replenished efficiently. If a tray is getting low, a cast member quickly replaces it, which reduces the empty or “cold-plate” problem buffets sometimes have. Yes, looking at you, 1900 Park Fare and Chef Mickey’s.

Boma Breakfast Review: The Food

The reasons people trek to Boma – Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge continues to be for the food. Guests can enjoy standard breakfast items, well-prepared desserts, African-inspired breakfast items, and non-traditional breakfast items. Also, guests will have plenty of choices at this extensive buffet.

Most people will enter the buffet on the far right. When starting here, guests will encounter non-traditional (at least for the United States of America) breakfast items. Those include the Oak-grilled Tomatoes and Asparagus. The creamy white cornmeal in this section can be a good choice for guests looking to try something new. As with all buffets, these items may vary slightly when you visit.

The next station contains carved meat and the Turkey Bobotie. For those looking for a brunch-style menu, the turkey and ham carving station will be a good fit. The Turkey Bobotie tastes like an egg casserole with peppers added. We found it tasted fine, but nothing to get too excited about. Of course, we fall in the minority regarding the Turkey Bobotie. However, we get some of it every time we visit Boma for its uniqueness.

Boma Breakfast Review: Standout Dishes (What You Should Absolutely Try)

We find the best way to experience Boma is to pair an “explorer” mentality with a respect for a few comfort anchors. Here’s what earns repeat trips to our plate, visit after visit.

1. The pastries and African breads

Boma Breakfast Review

Boma’s pastry spread is impressive: flaky croissants, raisin rolls, little tarts, and unique breads inspired by African baking traditions (think cardamom/ginger hints, dense rolls). The textures range from airy to chewy, and the flavors are often just outside what you’d find at a regular hotel buffet. If you like trying new breakfast breads, this is a must.

2. Mickey waffles (because Disney) with an upgrade

Yes, the Mickey waffles are there. Still, what’s fun at Boma is that they also offer them alongside other similar items (pancakes, flavored waffles), and the cast members will make them fresh if needed, with a crisp outside and a soft inside. Consider pairing a waffle with one of Boma’s jams or a spoonful of something from the sweet station for fun contrast. Guests with specific allergies are most likely to have their fresh waffles delivered to their table. For brave souls, there are also Simba waffles since we are dining at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

3. Bobotie (and other African savory specialties)

Boma Breakfast Buffet

Yes, we mentioned our thoughts on Bobotie earlier. However, if you want a dish that proves Boma offers more than “Disney breakfast classics,” try bobotie. This South African spiced meat casserole comes with a custard topping (think savory meat with warm spices and a gentle, eggy finish). It’s mildly spiced and surprisingly comforting in the morning. There are often other regional options, such as peri-peri-spiced items or stewed vegetables, that showcase a broader palate without being too challenging for less adventurous eaters. Sampling one small portion of bobotie gives you a sense of the buffet’s ethos.

4. Coconut steel-cut oatmeal & porridge options

This is one of those “why didn’t every breakfast buffet think of this?” items. The coconut steel-cut oatmeal (sometimes listed simply as coconut porridge) is creamy, subtly sweet, and topped with toasted coconut flakes or fruit. It’s a cozy, flavorful alternative to plain oats.

5. Carved ham and smoked selections

Boma Breakfast Review

The carving station meats are well-seasoned and sliced to order. The ham has good flavor (glaze that’s not overwhelming) and is a solid protein base. If you’re in the mood for something hearty, the carving station’s offerings are reliable and well executed. We have also seen turkey and roast beef at Boma.

6. Unique sides — pap, spiced potatoes, and more

Pap (an African version of grits or porridge) appears intermittently, depending on the menu rotation. When present, it’s lovely with a spoonful of a savory stew. Spiced potatoes and vegetable medleys round things out; they often carry a little extra seasoning that sets them apart from the bland hotel standard.

Boma Breakfast Review: What to Skip (or Don’t Prioritize)

Boma Breakfast Review.
  • Standard scrambled eggs — Serviceable, but not the highlight. If you want eggs, ask the cast member about made-to-order omelets, or opt for more interesting proteins on the buffet. The buffet usually offers a variety of scrambled eggs with fillings, and, of course, the pre-made omelets are a better choice than just standard scrambled eggs.
  • Overly sweet cinnamon rolls/pastries — A couple of sugary pastries can be sickening if you eat too many; pick one pastry and balance it with savory items.
  • Anything that looks wilted — As with any buffet, items at the far end of a tray can sit a little longer. If food looks like it’s been under the heat lamp for a while, ask staff if there’s a fresh tray coming. They are usually happy to help.
  • Parfaits—Though they look cute and healthy, we have never found them as good as other options.

Boma Breakfast Review: Is it Worth the Price?

Buffets at Walt Disney World run the gamut from reasonable to “you’ll need to mortgage a small island.” Whether Boma represents good value depends on what you want from breakfast.

If you view breakfast as a meal to fuel a theme park day and you plan to eat quickly, you might balk at the price. However, if you treat Boma like a leisurely meal, something you savor as part of the resort experience, the mix of unique items, well-executed comfort food, and immersive atmosphere justifies the adult price for many visitors. Remember: you pay not only for food but also for the setting, the variety, and the chance to try flavors you might not otherwise encounter at breakfast.

Many reviewers and regular guests consider Boma among the best breakfasts at Walt Disney World for its mix of quality and theme. It’s not just a functional meal, it’s an experience.

Boma Breakfast Buffet: What We Ate During This Trip to Boma Breakfast (And Some Thoughts)

During our latest visit, we sampled much of the Boma breakfast buffet. This time, we chose not to eat everything. Our day involved more food later, so we needed to pace ourselves.

Boma Breakfast review

However, we made sure to have some of the Turkey Bobotie. As usual, we appreciate its uniqueness, but we did not find it a standout at the Boma breakfast buffet.

Our usual pattern is to get some meat and cheese with our first plate. They are of above-average quality, which makes a good start to a non-traditional breakfast.

On this visit, we also added one of the pre-made omelets, eggs, and a sausage. The sausage is not your standard Walt Disney World sausage. It offers a more African flavor, as you would expect. On this day, it was okay.

Likewise, the eggs meet that quality level. The omelet offers good flavor. However, most guests will find it a bit greasy.

Second Plate During Our Boma Breakfast Review

Boma

Our second plate involved some sweets. We got the more popular sweets: cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, and one of the many muffins. We also got a danish from the buffet, which was solid but not great option. The cinnamon roll left us longing for a more distinct flavor. We wondered how this treat earned its own station on the Boma breakfast buffet.

In contrast, the muffin, though simple, tasted great. Additionally, the sticky bun stood out as one of the best items on the breakfast menu at Boma. On this visit, we skipped the Butterscotch Bread Pudding – yes, we know our server told us to get it. We would take the sticky buns over it any day. However, many guests prefer the bread pudding.

Boma Breakfast Review

After those sweets (and knowing we had two more desserts to try elsewhere), we focused on the savory breakfast item with the following two plates. The Boma bacon tastes like Disney bacon so it is good option. As you can see, we tried more omelets and had similar things to say as before.

Boma Breakfast Review

The carving station has ham and turkey. We got both during this visit. Each offered the quality one would expect at Boma. To round them out, we got more eggs (I know we said to skip them) and breakfast potatoes, which helped us eat more sweets later in the day. They also provided good flavor and value for our Boma breakfast.

Boma Breakfast Review: What About the Gluten-Free Waffles and Pastries?

Gluten-Free Waffles

Our Boma breakfast review needs to touch on the gluten-free items. The Boma buffet contains lotso f gluten-free items. However, several of the pastries are not. Also, the waffles are not gluten-free.

So, how are the gluten-free waffles and pastries? Well, they are gluten-free! The waffles tasted very gluten-free. We have noticed a decline in the quality of the gluten-free waffles across the Walt Disney World property. However, the donut provided better flavor than expected, in a good way.

Gluten-free pastries

Now, about that gluten-free muffin. It looked unappetizing. Though I cannot confirm, due to a lack of memory, I believe it was not eaten but taken home. However, it never got eaten even after that. I guess we will never know!

Boma Breakfast Review: Tips To Get the Most from Your Boma Breakfast

  • Make an Advance Dining Reservation — Boma is popular with resort guests and park-goers alike; ADRs are strongly recommended, especially on busier dates.
  • Arrive hungry and plan to linger — The buffet encourages exploration. Start with a small pastry, then do a savory plate with a tiny sample of African items, then go back for a favorite.
  • Ask the chefs about specialty or allergen-friendly options — If you have dietary needs, tell your server when you sit. The chef often comes out to explain and offer alternatives.
  • Try the items you can’t get elsewhere — Bobotie, pap, and the coconut porridge are breakfast things you’re unlikely to replicate at other Walt Disney World buffets easily.
  • Save room for a sweet finish — A spoonful of seasonal bread pudding or a small tart at the end ties the meal together.
  • Consider Boma part of a slower resort morning—it’s a great way to enjoy Animal Kingdom Lodge’s atmosphere without the rush of park schedules.

Boma Breakfast Review: Who Should Dine Here?

Boma’s Breakfast Is for You If:

  • You want more than a standard hotel buffet and enjoy flavors with a regional twist.
  • You’re looking for variety and the ability to sample several small dishes rather than committing to one plated entrée.
  • You appreciate immersive theming and a bustling, social breakfast environment.
  • You have dietary restrictions and want a spot where chefs will help navigate the buffet.
  • You’re staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, or you can navigate there easily during your stay.

Boma’s Breakfast Is Not the Best Fit:

  • You’re traveling on a very tight budget and plan to eat only a quick bite before a long park day.
  • You prefer quiet, intimate breakfasts — Boma hums with energy, which can be noisy at peak times.
  • Your picky eaters are scared away by anything that looks outside the norm or has a different name than they usually hear.

All things considered, Boma earns high marks as a breakfast destination for guests who want a memorable meal that’s more than just sustenance. It’s an especially good pick if you’re staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge (convenient) or if you want the chance to experience African-inspired dishes in the morning without committing to a complete dinner reservation.

Boma Breakfast Review Conclusion

Boma Breakfast Review

After spending a morning at Boma, it’s easy to understand why this breakfast continues to be recommended by Disney fans year after year. The buffet doesn’t rely on characters or gimmicks to stand out. It succeeds by offering quality, variety, and flavors that feel thoughtfully curated rather than mass-produced.

Boma breakfast works exceptionally well for guests who want something more memorable than a quick service meal but less hectic than a park-opening rush. Whether you’re staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge or making a dedicated trip for the food alone, this is the kind of meal that sets a relaxed, indulgent tone for the rest of the day. In a resort filled with standout dining, Boma breakfast remains a rare blend of consistency and creativity, and in a place where hype can be fleeting, that staying power speaks volumes. We would be happy to return and conduct another Boma breakfast review.
