Iron Gwazi metal detectors are now installed at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Here’s what riders need to know about the new safety policy. How did the second attempt to install Iron Gwazi metal detectors go? Since it flopped the first time, we wanted to wait a week or so before seeing if this new attempt would stick around. It has… but not for the benefit of guests.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has quietly rolled out a new safety measure at one of its most thrilling attractions. Iron Gwazi metal detectors have now been installed at the entrance to the park’s record-breaking hybrid coaster, marking a notable update to the park’s ride policies and guest experience.

A New Layer of Safety

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors

Iron Gwazi, known as North America’s tallest and the world’s fastest hybrid coaster, has been a must-ride for thrill-seekers since its debut. With speeds reaching up to 76 mph and a 206-foot drop, it’s no surprise that Busch Gardens is taking additional steps to enhance guest safety.

The addition of Iron Gwazi metal detectors appears to be part of an expanded effort to prevent guests from bringing loose items, phones, or other metallic objects onto the ride. While Busch Gardens Tampa Bay already uses lockers and storage bins at certain attractions, the move to add metal detectors suggests a push toward a stricter, more uniform policy, similar to what other major parks, such as Universal and Six Flags, have implemented on high-intensity coasters.

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors: How the New Process Works

Guests approaching Iron Gwazi’s entrance will now encounter a checkpoint with walk-through metal detectors operated by park team members. Riders must pass through before entering the queue, ensuring that no prohibited items are brought on board.

Based on our experience today, the system fails to be very smooth. Additionally, it lacks consistency. Team members have been assisting with instructions and reminding riders to store loose articles, including keys, phones, wallets, and change, in nearby lockers or with non-riders. This added step will drastically extend wait times during busy periods. Still, the improved safety oversight is expected to reduce incidents and improve overall ride operations.

Part of a Larger Trend in Theme Park Safety

The introduction of Iron Gwazi metal detectors reflects a growing trend across the theme park industry. Parks are placing greater emphasis on both guest and employee safety, ensuring that high-speed rides remain secure environments.

Universal Orlando Resort, for example, requires metal detector screenings for coasters like The Incredible Hulk Coaster and Jurassic World VelociCoaster. SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens’ sister park, has also expanded its use of lockers and safety checks in recent years.

Guest Reactions So Far

Initial guest reactions have been mixed. Many coaster fans note that metal detectors are a reasonable trade-off for safety, especially given the extreme forces at play on Iron Gwazi. Others have expressed frustration with having to store personal items or with the added step before riding.

However, unlike the ride locker system at places like Universal Orlando Resort, many guests have described the new metal detector and locker system as unfair. We concur! Others referred to it as a new paywall at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Why?

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors and Paid Lockers – Really?

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors

There are NO free lockers. Guests must pay $4 for a small locker for one ride. They can also purchase a small locker rental that can be moved from ride to ride for $12 for the day. Guests needing a bigger locker will pay more.

Additionally, the ride locker area at Iron Gwazi feels cramped and congested. We struggled to move within the locker area today. Also, when guests get off the ride, they are funneled into a small area to get back to their rented locker. We checked with Busch Gardens ambassadors to see if this congestion has been usual since the metal detectors went into operation this time. They claimed today was unusual. Speaking with colleagues, the system with the Iron Gwazi metal detectors needs work!

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors: Our Experience

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors

Working on another project, we rode Iron Gwazi three times to start our day at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. For many of us approaching retirement age, we would not recommend riding this attraction more than twice in a row, given the thrill factor. However, choices were made!

Each time we rode, we took a small amount of electronics with us for testing purposes. They varied each time. For comparison, the metal detectors at Universal Orlando Resort do not allow anything through that even resembles an electronic device.

However, our three trips through the Iron Gwazi metal detectors today brought different results. The results include:

  • First time with only a car key fob – no issue
  • Second time with an older Android phone – Iron Gwazi metal detectors went off sending me back
  • Third time with car key fob and older Android phone- no issue

As you can see, your mileage may vary, as they say. Of course, we encourage guests to use the ride lockers or leave items with a non-rider. Based on the thrill factor of Iron Gwazi, it is likely someone in your group will be the bag holder while others ride.

Rumors that metal detectors will be installed on other Busch Gardens Tampa Bay roller coasters hold merit. The rise of metal detectors may not be over at this Tampa theme park.

What Guests Should Know Before Riding

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

If you’re planning a trip to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, here’s what to keep in mind regarding the new Iron Gwazi metal detectors:

  • Arrive prepared: Leave loose items in your bag with a non-rider or in a rented locker before entering the line.
  • Follow staff instructions: Team members will guide you through the new security process.
  • Plan for lockers: Busch Gardens offers nearby lockers for rent, making it easy to secure valuables before boarding. Yes, they are for rent not free like at Universal Orlando Resort.
  • Expect (hopefully) smoother rides: With fewer loose items, dispatches are more efficient, and ride delays are reduced somewhat.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s decision to install Iron Gwazi metal detectors highlights the park’s ongoing commitment to safety while maintaining its reputation as one of Florida’s premier thrill destinations. However, the failure to offer a free ride-locker setup shows a complete disregard for the guest experience. This only adds to the growing narrative that Busch Gardens Tampa Bay operates with lower regard for guests. For those of us who love Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, we hope for signs that change this narrative.

This narrative probably speaks the truth and explains some of the reasons that Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has experienced two park presidents leaving this year alone. As other theme parks have learned, when you nickel-and-dime guests, satisfaction drops, leading to lost sales elsewhere in the theme park’s operations.
