We visited Busch Gardens to see what was going on with the Iron Gwazi metal detectors. After all the social media buzz, here’s what we actually found on our visit! We visited on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

We’d seen the social media chaos. The chatter. The outrage. The “my park day is ruined!” posts. Yes, we’re talking about the hot topic at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: metal detectors being added to the Iron Gwazi queue. Naturally, after a day of digesting our weight in Walt Disney World chicken strips (purely for research, of course), we decided to head to Busch Gardens to see what all the fuss was about.
We came armed with our trusty Howl-O-Scream bag, just big enough for keys, phone, and credit card. We felt ready to face whatever new security technology awaited us regarding Iron Gwazi metal detectors. So, we strolled confidently toward Iron Gwazi, expecting the full airport experience: bins, beeping detectors, maybe even someone yelling “REMOVE ALL METAL OBJECTS!”
But… nothing.

Iron Gwazi Metal Detectors

No glowing arch. No flashing lights. Just the same familiar “no loose articles” sign that’s been there since Gwazi was reborn as an RMC masterpiece. In fairness, we did notice the paid lockers near the queue, along with a sign mentioning metal detectors. So maybe the fuss wasn’t entirely imagined. Still, as we entered the queue itself…no scan, no beep, no drama.

However, there it was: the Iron Gwazi metal detector itself, sitting quietly off to the side like a middle school science project that never got plugged in. Was this the notorious device that sparked such fiery social media debates? The one that sent coaster fans into a tizzy about belt buckles and zipper pulls? Still, on this fine day, it was doing absolutely nothing.

We rode Iron Gwazi—just as usual. We heard the familiar announcement about placing small items in the pouch on the ride vehicle. However, we noticed a few more Busch Gardens ambassadors than normal and even spotted a few park leaders hovering nearby, perhaps monitoring the situation (or maybe just enjoying the breeze).
However, that was it. No chaos. No confiscated phones. So, no metal-detecting mayhem.
So, what gives?
Metal Detector Madness

Well, reports show that the new Iron Gwazi metal detectors were in use earlier in the week. Maybe Busch Gardens was testing them. Perhaps they were off for maintenance. Or maybe, just maybe, the park decided to give Iron Gwazi fans a break from one more pre-launch hurdle. Whatever the reason, “Metal Detector Madness” might be over—or at least on pause.
In the meantime, Iron Gwazi is still as intense, fast, and fantastic as ever. The biggest challenge of the day wasn’t a security checkpoint. It was trying not to lose our Howl-O-Scream bag in the gift shop afterward.
Iron Gwazi at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Iron Gwazi is an award-winning steel hybrid roller coaster located at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Florida. Opening in March 2022, it is a Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) conversion of the park’s former wooden coaster, Gwazi.
It stands at 206 feet tall, making it North America’s tallest hybrid coaster. Riders plummet down a 91-degree drop and reach top speeds of 76 miles per hour, making it the world’s fastest and steepest hybrid. The ride features 12 airtime moments and three inversions, delivering an intense, crocodile-inspired experience.
