Flame and Leather: Ryan Gosling Officially Joins the MCU as Ghost Rider

Marvel Studios officially announced Ryan Gosling Ghost Rider project at SDCC 2026. Shawn Levy will direct the upcoming superhero film slated for a 2028 release.
On the night, fans learned about the Black Panther 3 movie, San Diego Comic-Con’s legendary Hall H witnessed one of the biggest casting reveals in Marvel Cinematic Universe history. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige officially announced that Ryan Gosling will step into the boots of Johnny Blaze for a standalone Ghost Rider feature film slated for theatrical release in 2028. The three-time Academy Award nominee joined Feige on stage to confirm the long-rumored project, ending years of fan speculation and public interest from the actor himself.
Shawn Levy to Direct Ryan Gosling Ghost Rider Project

Helming the Hellfire-charged blockbuster is Shawn Levy, who recently directed Marvel Studios’ smash hit Deadpool & Wolverine. Gosling and Levy revealed on stage that their creative dynamic gelled while working together on their upcoming sci-fi collaboration, Star Wars: Starfighter (scheduled for May 28, 2027).
“We spent a lot of time last year making Star Wars: Starfighter, and as Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing, and I finally said ‘Bro, let’s ride,'” shared Levy during the panel.
A Passion Project Realized
Gosling’s affinity for Johnny Blaze, the daredevil stunt rider who sells his soul to save his father only to become the Spirit of Vengeance, is well documented in Hollywood circles. The role feels like a natural progression for the actor, whose career includes acclaimed turns as troubled stunt motorcyclists (The Place Beyond the Pines) and stunt drivers (Drive, The Fall Guy).
Interestingly, Gosling’s long-term partner, Eva Mendes, previously co-starred alongside Nicolas Cage in Sony’s original 2007 Ghost Rider film. While Nicolas Cage portrayed Johnny Blaze in two standalone features (2007 and 2011) and Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes on TV’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Gosling’s performance will mark the official debut of Ghost Rider within the mainline MCU continuity.
