As a part of Universal Orlando’s summer promotions, a new “creepy” dessert, Irene’s Creamsicle Cheesecake Calzone, arrived at Illumination’s Minion Cafe at Universal Studios Florida. It costs $11.99. So, of course, we went to try it.

What Is Illumination’s Minion Cafe?

If you haven’t visited Universal Studios Florida recently, you might be wondering what exactly the Minion Cafe is. It’s a quick-service restaurant located inside Universal Studios Florida, themed entirely around the yellow, goggle-wearing Minions from Illumination’s wildly popular Despicable Me film franchise. Since the first Despicable Me movie launched in 2010, the Minions have grown into one of the most recognizable characters in animated film history, beloved by kids and most adults alike.

Minion Cafe leans all the way into that fun, chaotic, candy-colored energy. The restaurant’s decor, menu items, and presentation are designed to feel like you’ve stepped into the Minions’ world. Guests should expect bright colors, silly names, and food that’s built as much for photos and smiles as for satisfying hunger. It’s a great spot for families and Minion superfans.

About the New Film: Minions & Monsters (July 1, 2026)

This particular dessert is tied to Illumination’s upcoming animated feature Minions & Monsters, scheduled to open in theaters on July 1, 2026. As the title suggests, the film brings Minions together with classic movie monsters in what is expected to be another family-friendly, laugh-out-loud adventure from the studio behind the Despicable Me series. Universal Orlando Resort is rolling out themed food and merchandise across its parks to celebrate the release, and Irene’s Creamsicle Cheesecake Calzone is one of the new menu items debuting as part of that promotion.

Also, along with the Minions & Monsters movie, there are additional movie tie-ins. Some examples are French’s mustard and a King’s Hawaiian promotion.

The First Look

Irene’s Creamsicle Cheesecake Calzone is a little unsettling at first glance. Those candy eyeballs staring back at you from a pool of vivid orange sauce will trigger an immediate “wait, what is that?” moment that messes with your head. Some of us though it looked like nachos. Still, whatever you think the orange vanilla cream sauce looks like, it may influence your first few bites of this Minion Cafe Cheesecake Calzone.

Guests who aren’t expecting a sweet dessert might genuinely do a double-take. Several people around us wondered if it was a savory or a sweet item. That said, the presentation and fun factor are genuinely excellent. This thing was built for a photo and for the Minion Cafe crowd. It fits the theme perfectly.

The Experience

The calzone itself is on the thinner side, but it works well. The pizza dough is nicely toasted and browned. Also, it has a satisfying bite, especially around the edge. Don’t expect it to arrive piping hot; this dessert comes out warm rather than fresh-from-the-oven hot, and you’ll want to eat it promptly. Letting it sit and go cold is a mistake you’ll regret.

Inside, you’ll find a commercial cheesecake filling that we’d describe as solidly average. It is not bad, not particularly memorable, just functional. It does its job. The overall sweetness level is high, which adds to the sugar rush this dish delivers. The orange marmalade is listed in the item description, but it played a surprisingly minor role in our experience. We kept waiting for it to show up more prominently in the flavor and were left a bit puzzled by its contribution.

The crunchy candy eyes scattered across the top are a fun textural touch. However, picky eaters, especially kids who find the combination of pizza dough and dessert confusing, may need a little encouragement. Our group had no trouble with it, but your results may vary depending on who’s at the table.

  • The orange sauce looks savory, expect a moment of confusion
  • Serve warm and do not let this go cold
  • Commercial cheesecake filling is average, not exceptional
  • Orange marmalade barely registers in the overall flavor
  • Pizza dough in a dessert context may trip up picky eaters
  • Very sweet so probably best shared between two or more guests

Fun Dessert: Minion Cafe Cheesecake Calzone

Irene’s Creamsicle Cheesecake Calzone is a dessert that prioritizes spectacle over flavor. At a theme park, that’s not always the wrong call. It’s very sweet, best shared between two people, and scores high on the fun factor scale. That said, we can think of many other desserts around Universal Orlando Resort we’d choose over this one. That doesn’t mean it’s bad. It isn’t! Still, it’s a “try it once for the experience” item rather than something you’ll crave on your next visit.

If you’re visiting with kids who love the Minions or with guests who want to embrace the full Minion Cafe experience, this is absolutely worth ordering. Just go in with calibrated expectations for flavor, eat it warm, and consider sharing.
