Change is officially on the horizon at Universal Orlando Resort. After years of speculation about the future of the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Orlando Resort has confirmed that construction work will soon begin in the land. While details remain scarce, this announcement has fueled fresh rumors that a long-awaited Legend of Zelda-themed expansion could be on its way.

A Permit Signals Big Changes

The first signs of movement came when the Orlando Business Journal reported that Universal had filed a permit to demolish five acres of land in the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure. Shortly after, Universal provided a statement to the outlet, confirming that work is indeed set to begin.

“In the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments,” said Kristen Smith, Director of Public Relations for Universal, in an emailed statement to Orlando Business Journal. That statement doesn’t reveal what exactly is being built, but it makes one thing clear: Universal is preparing for something major.

The End of the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure?

For many longtime visitors, the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure has been one of the park’s most unique areas. The land once featured multiple attractions, including the now-closed immersive Poseidon’s Fury walkthrough show, which shut its doors in May 2023. Today, only the popular Mythos restaurant and a handful of shops remain.

With so much of the land already shuttered, fans have long wondered how much longer the Lost Continent would last in its current form. The new demolition permit strongly suggests that its days are numbered and that Universal is finally ready to move forward with a new concept.

Could Zelda Be Next for Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure?

Naturally, the biggest question on fans’ minds is what will replace the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure. One rumor that has gained major traction is the possibility of a Legend of Zelda land.

The speculation isn’t new. Nintendo and Universal have already partnered to bring Super Nintendo World to Universal Studios Japan, Hollywood, and soon to Epic Universe in Orlando. But fans have always believed there’s room for more than just Mario and friends. With its sprawling landscapes, iconic characters like Link and Princess Zelda, and decades of rich storytelling, The Legend of Zelda would be a natural fit for a theme park environment.

We have long been hearing rumors that a Zelda-themed land could open at Universal Islands of Adventure as early as 2027, aligning with Universal’s push to expand beyond Universal Epic Universe and continue refreshing its existing parks. While Universal has not confirmed any details, the timeline of demolition now and potential construction in the coming years certainly lines up with those rumors.

Why Zelda Makes Sense for Universal Islands of Adventure

A Zelda expansion would not only replace a largely dormant area but would also fit perfectly with the park’s identity. Universal Islands of Adventure was built to bring guests into the worlds of epic stories, myths, and adventures. Few franchises capture that adventurous spirit more than The Legend of Zelda.

Fans imagine everything from a Hyrule Castle centerpiece to an interactive dark ride where guests join Link on a quest, to shops selling potions and merchandise styled after the beloved video game series. Dining could even tie into Zelda’s fantasy world, complementing or even replacing the award-winning Mythos restaurant.

Universal’s Ongoing Growth

This potential expansion is just one piece of Universal’s broader transformation. With Epic Universe opening this year and bringing Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon, Universal Monsters, and more, the resort is entering a new golden age of theme park development.

Updating Universal Islands of Adventure alongside Universal Epic Universe ensures that Universal Orlando Resort continues to offer fresh experiences across all of its parks. By the time Epic Universe celebrates its first anniversary, Universal Islands of Adventure could already be in the middle of building one of the most highly anticipated expansions in the theme park industry.

What’s Next

For now, fans will have to wait and see. Universal has not announced any official replacement for the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure, and construction could take years before a new attraction or land opens. However, the confirmation that demolition and site preparation are happening is the clearest sign yet that something big is coming.

Whether it’s Zelda or another major intellectual property, the transformation of the Lost Continent Universal Islands of Adventure marks an exciting new chapter for the park. With construction beginning soon, it’s only a matter of time before the future of Universal Islands of Adventure starts to take shape.
