Explore the new Tide Pool Florida Aquarium exhibit in Tampa—an immersive, cold-water touch habitat featuring over 200 marine animals from the Pacific Northwest.

Tide Pool Florida Aquarium

A brand-new adventure has made waves in Downtown Tampa as The Florida Aquarium officially debuts its latest immersive exhibit, The Tide Pool. This first-of-its-kind cold-water touch habitat on Florida’s west coast offers an unforgettable hands-on experience, letting guests interact with sea creatures from the chilly waters of the Pacific Northwest. This exciting addition opened August 1, 2025, on the second-floor mezzanine of the aquarium, and it’s already becoming a must-visit for families, marine enthusiasts, and anyone craving a deeper connection to the ocean.

What Makes Tide Pool Florida Aquarium So Unique?

Tide Pool Florida Aquarium

This isn’t your average touch tank. The Tide Pool Florida Aquarium is a 60-foot-long, 4,000-gallon interactive habitat featuring more than 200 marine invertebrates across 22 different species—four times more animals than the aquarium’s previous No Bone Zone exhibit.

What really sets it apart is its cold-water environment. Kept at a brisk 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the habitat simulates the wild, rocky coastlines of the Pacific Northwest. It’s a rare opportunity for Floridians to engage with animals like:

  • Red Bat Star – A brilliantly colored sea star with five to nine arms
  • Ochre Sea Star – Known for bold orange and purple hues
  • Green Surf Anemone – Tentacled, neon-green beauties that sway in the water
  • Spot Prawn – A deep-sea crustacean that plays a vital role in ocean ecosystems
  • Black-Eyed Hermit Crab – The shell-toting scavenger with serious personality

Multi-Sensory Design That Brings the Coast to Life

Tide Pool Florida Aquarium

Beyond its incredible marine life, the Tide Pool Florida Aquarium delivers a fully immersive experience. Designed in six expansive sections, the habitat features cascading water over realistic rockwork and an advanced wave action system that mimics the natural crash and pull of real ocean tides.

A surround sound system projects the ambient roar of surf and seabirds, while a 70-foot mural by artist Curtis Stokes shifts in real time from sunset to starry night and into sunrise using UV-reactive lighting. The effect is nothing short of stunning. As Tim Binder, senior VP of animal care & health at the Aquarium, puts it, “Every element of The Tide Pool is designed to immerse our guests in the diversity and resilience of life in these coastal habitats.”

Hands-On Learning at the Tide Pool Florida Aquarium

This exhibit isn’t just fun—it’s educational. The tactile experience of touching marine animals encourages guests, especially kids, to ask questions and engage deeply with ocean life. It’s a proven way to spark long-term interest in marine conservation.

President & CEO Roger Germann said it best: “With The Tide Pool, we’re creating a rare opportunity to interact with incredible cold-water species not found in Florida—offering the kind of hands-on experience that ignites curiosity and can spark a lifelong commitment to conservation.”

Part of a Bold New Era for The Florida Aquarium

The Tide Pool Florida Aquarium marks a major milestone in the Aquarium’s $45 million expansion plan. Coming on the heels of the successful MORPH’D gallery, it paves the way for even more exciting additions over the next few years, including:

  • Puffins arriving in late 2026 to early 2027
  • A California sea lion habitat, the first of its kind on Florida’s west coast
  • A new African penguin habitat, both opening in late 2027 to early 2028

This growth is powered by community support and funding, including a $15 million investment from the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) and key exhibit sponsors like Robert R. Sharp & Family and Marvin L. & Betsy Holloway.

Celebrating 30 Years of Ocean Inspiration

As The Florida Aquarium celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025, the launch of Tide Pool Florida Aquarium couldn’t be more symbolic. Since opening in 1995, this nonprofit institution has welcomed over a million guests annually and championed marine life protection through groundbreaking coral reef restoration, sea turtle rescue, and hands-on education.

From locals to out-of-town visitors, everyone now has a new reason to stop by and connect with marine life in a new, meaningful way. So next time you’re in Tampa, plan a visit to this brand-new habitat and let the chilly waves of the Pacific—and the creatures who call it home—leave you inspired.
