Still, when swimming up an appetite, where should you head to refuel? Of all the dining choices scattered throughout Adventure Island, Mango Joe’s Beach Cafe stands out as the absolute best option for hungry guests.
Adventure Island Water Park
If you are looking to beat the Florida heat, Adventure Island in Tampa is a tropical escape. Located near Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, this 30-acre water park blends high-thrill excitement with laid-back island vibes, making it a great day trip.
For thrill-seekers, the park packs a punch with incredible slides. You can race your friends down the multi-lane Rapids Racer or experience the swirling, colorful tunnels of Solar Vortex. If you prefer a slower pace, you can grab a tube and drift down the scenic Rambling Bayou lazy river or catch some waves at the giant Endless Surf wave pool. In the summer, this water park offers an after-hours, lower crowd-level experience called AquaGlow.
Tip for First-Timers: Arrive right at opening on a weekday. You’ll easily beat the heaviest crowds, secure the best lounge chairs, and ride the most popular slides with minimal wait times. Rent an all-day locker near the entrance so you can splash completely worry-free.
Water Park Dining 101: The All-Day Dining Plan
If you want to get the most bang for your buck, understanding the All-Day Dining Plan at Adventure Island is essential. This convenient add-on allows guests to navigate through participating restaurants once every 90 minutes to receive an entree, an additional side or dessert, and a non-alcoholic beverage. The current cost is $49.99 for adults and $29.99 for kids ages three to nine.
With the high theme park prices, using the Adventure Island All-Day Dining Plan makes sense.To maximize this plan, efficiency is the name of the game. The best dining option, Mango Joe’s Beach Cafe, functions similarly to the high-volume smokehouse quick-service locations you might find at SeaWorld or Busch Gardens. The menu here leans heavily on classic smokehouse staples: ribs, smoked chicken, and hearty sandwiches. Crucially, the side options at Mango Joe’s are far superior to the standard fare at other, more lackluster dining spots at Adventure Island.
However, a great dining strategy requires keeping an eye on the clock. During a recent weekday visit in early June, we initially considered ordering the smoked turkey sandwich. However, after observing several people ahead of us in line, we noticed that the turkey sandwich is made entirely to order, which significantly slows down service. If you are trying to stay strictly on track with your 90-minute dining plan timer, ordering a custom-built item can seriously derail your schedule.

To keep things moving, we pivoted and opted for the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. We admittedly placed this order with fear and trepidation, considering that our previous pulled pork meal nearby at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay was downright awful! So, how does a water park spin on a barbecue staple hold up?
The Main Event: The Adventure Island Pulled Pork Sandwich Review
Unlike the sauced presentation you will find at locations like Zambia Smokehouse, Mango Joe’s Beach Cafe serves its pulled pork completely dry. There is absolutely no sauce pre-added to the meal.
On its own, the Adventure Island pulled pork is decent and relatively tender, but without any enhancement, the sandwich settles right into a very average lane. The real magic happens when you head over to the condiment station. We added a very generous amount of barbecue sauce from the dispenser, which instantly elevated the entire meal.
While theme park barbecue can often set a fairly low bar, our initial tasting left us incredibly impressed. With the added sauce, this may very well be the best pulled pork sandwich we have eaten at any theme park in at least a year. It easily outperformed recent experiences with other regional pulled pork options, such as the Flame Tree Barbecue sandwich at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the pulled pork offerings at Universal Epic Universe, and the standard pork meals at Zambia Smokehouse.
The Sides & A Word on Timing
For our side options, we sampled the french fries and the macaroni and cheese. The fries were admittedly nothing special, but the kitchen crew covered the entire plate with them, providing plenty of food to share if you are dining with a partner.
The real surprise was the mac and cheese. It tasted noticeably better than the vast majority of quick-service mac and cheese options we have encountered at any theme park over the last year and a half. For full disclosure, our initial spectacular meal took place before noon on a weekday in early June. Food quality can naturally fluctuate as the afternoon rush sets in and items sit under heat lamps, which is an important variable to keep in mind.
Adventure Island Pulled Pork Sandwich Consistency Check: The Second Visit
To see if Mango Joe’s Beach Cafe could maintain this high standard, we returned for a follow-up visit. On this second trip, the experience wasn’t quite as engaging. The overall Adventure Island Pulled Pork quality wasn’t as premium, nor did the presentation look as sharp as our first plate. The pork portion itself was still reasonable, but noticeably smaller than what we were given previously.
Once again, the total lack of pre-applied sauce stood out. Fortunately, we knew exactly how to fix it: we headed straight to the condiment pump and added plenty of Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. Even with the slight drop in consistency on the second pass, the sandwich remained a genuinely good meal.
Adventure Island Pulled Pork Sandwich Warning
Overall, we find the Adventure Island Pulled Pork Sandwich at Mango Joe’s Beach Cafe to be a great, reliable option when dining at Adventure Island. It delivers great value, especially when utilized as part of the All-Day Dining Plan. Just remember the gold standard rule for this location: use plenty of sauce!
A final tip for outdoor diners: Be fully aware that the local birds can be incredibly aggressive at Mango Joe’s. They are not shy about trying to swoop in and steal a bite of your food, so guard your pulled pork closely while eating on the patio!
