Universal Orlando confirmed a Dark Universe Indoor Coaster for Epic Universe. Here is what we know and our best guesses about which Universal Monster stars in it.

Darkmoor is about to get a lot louder. Just over 17 months after Universal Epic Universe officially opened its gates, Universal Orlando Resort has confirmed a Dark Universe indoor coaster, an all-new thrill ride for the park’s Universal Monsters land. It will sit right next to Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, tell an all-new story pulled from the Universal Monsters vault, and it is already under construction.

What Universal did not say is the part everyone actually wants to know: which monster is driving. So we did what any reasonable theme park fan does with a vague press release and a pile of county permits. We started guessing. Responsibly. Mostly. In fairness, others have done the work. We are just reporting.

What Universal Announced

Here is the heart of Thursday’s announcement, straight from Universal Orlando Resort:

“Just over a year after its official debut, Universal Epic Universe is already preparing for its next thrilling addition: an all-new indoor coaster coming to Dark Universe, one of the theme park’s five extraordinary worlds. Located next to the award-winning Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, the upcoming attraction will immerse guests in an all-new story inspired by the iconic Universal Monsters franchise. Construction is already underway, with an opening planned in the years ahead.”

Universal Orlando Resort added that it will reveal more information about the coaster later. No name, no story, no ride specs, and no opening year. Just a big, beautiful question mark sitting behind Frankenstein Manor.

That “award-winning” label is earned, by the way. Monsters Unchained took Best Dark Ride at the 2026 Golden Ticket Awards, its second win in a row. Building your next coaster next door to that is a statement of confidence.

Where the New Dark Universe Indoor Coaster Is Going (and How Big It Is)

Theme park permit watchers have been tracking this one for months under the name Project 680. Here is what the paper trail and the aerials have shown so far:

  • Location: The ride is going on the expansion pad behind the Monsters Unchained show building, between Frankenstein Manor and The Burning Blade Tavern. Earlier site plans labeled the 3.34 acre plot “Expansion Phase 2,” which tells you Universal always had a plan for this land.
  • Size: Orange County permits describe a three-story building of roughly 93,308 square feet, with about 71,500 square feet listed as tenant space.
  • The giveaway: Permits list a ride maintenance bay on the first floor, which is about as close as paperwork gets to saying “yes, this is a ride.”
  • Timeline so far: Trees came down, and survey markers went up in August, groundbreaking followed on September 13, and aerial photos in early October showed foundation drilling across the site.

For context, this is a big deal for Universal Epic Universe. Every coaster that opened with the park (Stardust Racers, Curse of the Werewolf, Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, and Mine-Cart Madness) is mostly or entirely outdoors. This would be the park’s first fully indoor roller coaster, which means a thrill ride that keeps running when the 3 p.m. Florida thunderstorm rolls in. Since capacity has been an ongoing issue for Epic Universe, an all-weather ride helps with exactly that.

Our Best Guesses: What Could the New Dark Universe Indoor Coaster Be?

Everything below is Dark Universe indoor coaster speculation. Informed speculation, built on rumors, permits and the existing Dark Universe story, but speculation all the same. Universal has confirmed none of it.

1. Bride of Frankenstein (The Front Runner)

The most persistent rumor right now is that the coaster is themed to the Bride of Frankenstein. It also just makes sense. Dark Universe is built around Victoria Frankenstein and her family’s legacy, and Monsters Unchained already has her battling Dracula, his Brides and a whole menagerie of escaped monsters. The 1935 Bride of Frankenstein is one of the most iconic films in the Universal Monsters library, and it is the one A-list monster story Darkmoor has not really told yet. A storm-powered launch out of a reanimation lab practically writes itself.

Also, here is our favorite breadcrumb: Universal’s own social post kicked off with the words “Electrifying news!” Could just be a fun opener. Could also be a lightning bolt hint pointing straight at the lab. We are choosing to believe it is the second one. Most importantly, the sources we trust tell us the Bride is coming

2. Creature from the Black Lagoon (The Long Time Fan Favorite)

For years, the default prediction for Dark Universe’s next ride was the Gill-man. That speculation has long pointed to a Creature from the Black Lagoon attraction. The twist is that the rumored version was a boat ride. Several theme park news site bought into that rumor. This announcement suggests it will not happen in that form. Now, that does not rule the Creature out entirely, though. A swampy indoor coaster that dodges through misty lagoons and ends with a very dry encounter with the Gill-man is not hard to imagine. Still, we would not count on it!

3. Dracula’s Revenge

Dracula is the big bad of Monsters Unchained, where Victoria ultimately fends him off with an artificial sunlight generator. A sequel style coaster where the Count gets loose in Darkmoor would be a natural continuation of the land’s existing story, with the Brides of Dracula as the scene stealers. Universal’s statement promises an all-new story, though, so we see Dracula as more of a supporting cast member (if anything) than the headliner.

Long Shots

  • The Invisible Man: Great for illusions and projection tricks, but a tough sell for a ride name on a park map.
  • The Phantom of the Opera: Already pops up in Monsters Unchained, and a Paris Opera House coaster would be gorgeous, but it is a tonal stretch for a thrill ride.
  • The Mummy: Possible in theory, but Revenge of the Mummy already handles indoor launched-coaster duty over at Universal Studios Florida. We would be surprised to see Imhotep (or any version of the mummy) pull a double shift.

Dark Universe Indoor Coaster: What Kind of Coaster?

Universal used the word “thrill” in the headline, and a three-story building with a ride maintenance bay points toward a serious coaster rather than a gentle family ride. Our best guess is a launched coaster that weaves between show scenes and dark sections, closer in spirit to Revenge of the Mummy than to the spinning, family-friendly Curse of the Werewolf next door. Expect Universal’s usual bag of tricks: animatronics, projection, fire, fog, and at least one moment designed purely to make you scream in front of strangers.

Dark Universe Indoor Coaster: When Will It Open?

Universal only said “in the years ahead,” and that plural is doing a lot of work. With foundation work starting this fall and no opening year attached, we would not plan a trip around this coaster before 2028 at the earliest. Treat that as our guess, not a date, and keep an eye on Main Street Magic for official updates.

The Dark Universe coaster is just one piece of a busy pipeline. Universal also highlighted these upcoming additions:

Universal Epic Universe opened with one of the best dark rides on the planet, sitting in Dark Universe, and, frankly, one coaster that left thrill-seekers wanting more. An indoor thrill coaster fixes that, adds a rain-proof headliner to a park that needs capacity, and gives Universal a chance to tell another Monsters story with the same craft it poured into Monsters Unchained. Our money is on the Bride. Our hearts are still a little bit with the Creature. Either way, Darkmoor just got a lot more interesting.
