We tried the new Portillo’s Oreo Cake. Here is how the OREO frosting and cake base compare to the famous chocolate cake.

Portillo’s fans already know the chocolate cake is the main-event at the dessert counter. Now the chain is bringing in a famous cookie sidekick just in time for Halloween. The new OREO Shake, OREO Cake and OREO Cake Shake hit Portillo’s locations nationwide on October 6, 2026, and they are here for a limited time while supplies last. We tried the Portillo’s Oreo Cake, and here is how the slice shook out.

What Is the Portillo’s OREO Cake?

Portillo’s describes the OREO Cake as a delicate, moist white cake mixed with crushed OREO cookie pieces, iced with sweet OREO frosting and topped with more OREO cookie pieces. It is the centerpiece of a three-item collaboration.

  • OREO Shake: a hand spun vanilla shake loaded with crushed OREO cookie pieces.
  • OREO Cake: the white cake slice we are reviewing today.
  • OREO Cake Shake: a vanilla shake blended with OREO Cake and topped with crushed OREO cookie pieces.

That last one follows in the footsteps of the original Chocolate Cake Shake, which came from the simple idea of blending the famous cake right into a shake.

Our Portillo’s Oreo Cake Review

Let’s get the big comparison out of the way. This is a solid option, but it is not as robust in flavor as the chocolate cake at Portillo’s. If the chocolate cake is the headliner, this is the opening act that still gets a few songs stuck in your head. However, the Portillo’s OREO Cake fails to look as pretty as the promotional image

Still, the icing is the part that surprised us. It grew on us the more we ate it, and it pairs well with the cake base. Each bite got better than the last, which is not something we can say about every limited-time dessert.

The best news for anyone wary of sugar overload: it is not sickly sweet the way many cookie-and-cream or OREO treats can be. You can finish the slice without needing a nap, which is a real win for a dessert featuring cookie pieces.

Portillo’s Oreo Cake Price and the Perks Deal

A slice runs $4.29. You can also use Portillo’s Perks with this item, so you might get a free slice of cake like we did using our rewards program perks. Keep an eye on the loyalty app, because Perks members also get a $1 slice of OREO Cake with a purchase of $5 or more from October 12 to 18. It is limited to one discounted slice per qualifying transaction, and additional terms and exclusions apply.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, with the right expectations. If you want the knockout flavor of the chocolate cake, that is still the move. But as a limited time menu item, the Portillo’s Oreo Cake is a fun, balanced seasonal addition that does not overdo the sweetness. Grab a slice while it lasts, especially if you can stack it with a Perks deal.
