Otto’s Carbonara Review: A Cheesy Minion Cafe Surprise

Otto’s Carbonara brings yellow cavatappi, garlic cream sauce, pancetta, and peas to Illumination’s Minion Cafe at Universal Studios Florida.

We tried the pasta entrée that joined the menu at Illumination’s Minion Cafe at Universal Studios Florida, giving guests another character-inspired option to consider when visiting Minion Land. Otto’s Carbonara combines yellow cavatappi pasta with a garlic cream sauce, pancetta, and peas, creating a dish that looks like something the Minions might have put together in their kitchen.
While this certainly isn’t the most traditional interpretation of carbonara you will find in Orlando, it also isn’t trying to compete with an authentic Italian restaurant. Instead, the dish takes the general idea of a creamy pasta with pancetta. It turns it into a family-friendly theme park entrée with a fun presentation and a little Minion chaos built into the experience.

At $20.99, Otto’s Carbonara is one of the more expensive quick-service entrées at Universal Studios Florida, but the portion is substantial, and the individual ingredients are solid. There are some presentation and operational quirks to consider, though, before making it your next Minion Cafe order.
When Did Otto’s Carbonara First Appear?

Otto’s Carbonara is a relatively new addition to the Minion Cafe menu. The entrée was added on June 15, 2026. The dish appears to have replaced Otto’s Noodle Bowl, which was one of the restaurant’s original character-themed entrées. That makes the connection to Otto particularly appropriate. The character had already been represented on the Minion Cafe menu through Otto’s Noodle Bowl, but the new carbonara gives guests a completely different interpretation of the character’s signature dish.
The current menu lists Otto’s Carbonara at $20.99 and describes it simply as yellow cavatappi, garlic cream sauce, pancetta, and peas. Interestingly, a similar character-based carbonara concept also appeared at Universal Studios Hollywood as James’ Carbonara during the 2026 Mega Movie Summer celebration. Universal described that dish as cavatappi pasta tossed in garlic cream sauce with pancetta and peas.
Why Is the Dish Named After Otto?

For guests who are not familiar with every Minion, Otto is one of the more distinctive characters in the franchise. He was introduced in Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, where Illumination describes him as the newest Minion. The character is chatty, easily distracted and has a charming lisp caused by his braces.
Otto also plays an important role in the story of Minions: The Rise of Gru, making him more than just another background Minion. His recognizable look and personality have helped make him one of the characters used for themed merchandise and food.
At Illumination’s Minion Cafe, the character connection is straightforward. Otto already had his own Noodle Bowl, and now his name has been attached to the restaurant’s carbonara. The dish has no complicated culinary explanation. It is simply another example of how Minion Cafe uses individual characters to give ordinary theme park foods a more entertaining identity. Still, a Minion named Otto having a giant bowl of pasta placed in front of you feels appropriately ridiculous.
Otto’s Carbonara Has a DIY Presentation

The first thing that caught our attention when Otto’s Carbonara arrived at the table was the presentation. The pasta arrives in a themed bowl that covers the pasta portion of the dish. Guests are expected to remove the bowl themselves, creating a small DIY moment before they can really dig into the meal.
It is a fun idea in theory, and it certainly makes for a more memorable presentation than simply receiving a plate of pasta. The problem is that the pasta underneath does not look particularly appealing when you first uncover it. The yellow cavatappi can look somewhat plain and separated from the other components, while the toppings and sauce do not necessarily come together visually right away.
Once everything is mixed together, however, the dish looks considerably better. Combining the pasta, garlic cream sauce, pancetta, peas, and cheese creates a much more appetizing final product than the initial presentation suggests. That little bit of assembly also fits the overall personality of Minion Cafe. This is not meant to be a sophisticated dining experience. It’s meant to be fun, colorful, and slightly silly, and having guests reveal and mix their own pasta certainly fits that approach.
How Does Otto’s Carbonara Taste?

The biggest surprise with Otto’s Carbonara is just how cheesy and creamy it is. Calling this dish carbonara will get the attention of anyone who takes traditional Italian carbonara seriously, because it is not an authentic carbonara. The garlic cream sauce pushes the dish much closer to a cheesy Alfredo-style pasta than a traditional carbonara. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing at a theme park.
The pasta is very approachable, and the combination of creamy sauce, pancetta, and peas is an easy one for a wide range of guests to enjoy. The result is particularly kid-friendly, which makes sense for a restaurant built around one of the most recognizable animated franchises in the world. The pancetta provides the salty and savory component you expect from the dish, while the peas add some freshness and texture. The pasta itself is a perfectly serviceable quick-service component, and once everything is mixed together, the sauce coats the cavatappi nicely.
There is also a noticeable amount of cheese involved, making this a heavier dish than someone expecting a classic carbonara might anticipate. If you go into it expecting an authentic Italian preparation, you will probably be disappointed. If you approach it as a creamy, cheesy pasta designed for a theme park audience, it makes considerably more sense. Still, Minion Cafe never claims that this is an authentic carbonara. It is a character-themed quick-service entrée, and it works reasonably well within that category.
Things Guests Should Know About Dining at Minion Cafe

Illumination’s Minion Cafe operates differently from many traditional quick-service restaurants at Universal Studios Florida. The restaurant was designed around mobile ordering and table delivery. Guests find a table, use the QR code or table number associated with it, place their order through the Universal Orlando app, and then have team members bring the food to them.
There is also a pickup option, so guests who want to grab food and leave can use that system instead. The table delivery setup is particularly useful for families because you can get everyone seated before placing the order rather than trying to find an available table after collecting trays of food.
The system can also create its own challenges. During our visit, we encountered multiple team members attempting to deliver food to the wrong table because of difficulties locating the correct table numbers. This was not a one-time mistake. Several team members were trying to match orders to tables, creating a noticeable operational hiccup.
The restaurant itself remains one of the more heavily themed quick-service locations at Universal Studios Florida. Minion Cafe features multiple themed dining areas, including the Minion kitchen and break room, along with colorful Minion details throughout the restaurant. The venue opened in 2023 as part of the original Minion Land offerings.
For first-time guests, take a few minutes to look around rather than treating Minion Cafe as just a place to grab food. The theming is a significant part of the experience, and the different seating areas provide plenty of Minion-related details to discover.
Is Otto’s Carbonara Worth $20.99?
At $20.99, Otto’s Carbonara feels like it is priced a dollar or two higher than where it really needs to be for a quick-service pasta entrée. The portion size helps justify the price somewhat, as this is not a tiny serving that leaves you searching for another snack 20 minutes later. The food itself is also perfectly respectable for quick service. The ingredients work together, the pasta is filling, the pancetta adds plenty of savory flavor and the peas provide some contrast to the rich sauce.
The presentation is probably the most entertaining part of the dish, even if the initial appearance under the themed bowl isn’t particularly impressive. Mixing everything together improves both the appearance and the overall eating experience. Ultimately, Otto’s Carbonara is a solid quick-service entrée fit for the audience Minion Cafe is trying to serve. It is cheesy, creamy, filling, and approachable, with enough character theming to make it more interesting than a standard bowl of pasta.
Just do not order it expecting a plate of authentic carbonara. That would not be fair to the quick-service dining location/Order it expecting a very cheesy Minion-themed pasta dish, and Otto’s Carbonara makes considerably more sense.
For us, the biggest takeaway is that this is a fun part of the Minion Cafe’s menu, even if the $20.99 price gives us a little pause. The food is better once you get past the initial presentation, and the generous portion means it can make for a reasonably substantial theme park meal. Just remember: when Otto is in charge of the kitchen, authenticity may not be high on the priority list.
