The Zootopia 3 D23 announcement is official. Here’s the teaser logo, cast update, everything Disney confirmed, and what’s still unknown.

Well, it’s official: Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde aren’t done catching bad guys (and the occasional otter running an illegal fish-jerky ring). Zootopia 3 was confirmed Friday night, August 14, during Disney’s D23 Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center in Anahein. Well, given how Zootopia 2 performed at the box office, this announcement had all the suspense of us predicting that Gideon’s Bakehouse will sell out of “Morning Coffee Cake Cookies” by 1:00 p.m.

Let’s be clear about what we know, because the internet is already three sequels ahead of Disney. Animation chief Jared Bush took the stage alongside Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan, who co-hosted the entire Entertainment Showcase, to confirm that the fan-favorite cast is returning. Goodwin put it about as plainly as it gets: “The bunny and the snake will be back!”

Beyond that, Disney kept its cards close during this Zootopia 3 D23 announcement. The only asset shown was a teaser logo, a “3” built entirely out of feathers, which all but confirms the sequel is heading into bird territory after Zootopia 2 expanded the city to reptiles and amphibians. No plot synopsis and no new characters were named. Still, despite what you may have seen floating around social media, no official release date has been announced yet. If you’ve seen a 2028 date (March?) circulating, treat it as fan speculation until Disney says otherwise. Disney hasn’t announced an official release date

Zootopia 3 D23 Announcement: Why This Isn’t a Surprise

Zootopia 2 didn’t just perform well last November. It became the highest-grossing animated film in Hollywood history, clearing well over a billion dollars worldwide. A third installment was less a question of “if” and more a question of “when Disney feels like announcing it.” So, D23, Disney’s biannual love letter to its own fandom, was always the obvious venue.

For what it’s worth, this tracks with reporting from earlier this year suggesting Disney fast-tracked development on a third film shortly after Zootopia 2‘s opening weekend numbers came in. So no, the ink on this announcement isn’t dry, but the decision to make the movie clearly was made months ago.

What This Could Mean for the Parks

It’s early, very early, feather-logo early, to talk theme park integration. Still, it’s worth remembering that Zootopia already has a physical footprint at Shanghai Disneyland, and the franchise’s presence and merchandise lines at Walt Disney World have only grown since Zootopia 2‘s release. If the bird-focused biome from the teaser makes it into the final film, don’t be shocked if it eventually shows up in future retail lines, popcorn buckets, or a rotating Disney Springs pop-up long before we see so much as a teaser trailer. We’ll be watching.
