Google Disney AI content has been removed after Disney issued a cease-and-desist over unauthorized AI-generated videos using its characters.

In a dramatic escalation of Google Disney AI intellectual property tensions in the artificial intelligence era, Google has removed scores of AI-generated videos featuring Disney characters after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from The Walt Disney Company alleging unauthorized use of its copyrighted properties. The dispute centers on Google’s AI tools, including models tied to Gemini, YouTube’s Veo video generator, and other services, which Disney claims have been generating and distributing videos and images of characters from Frozen, The Lion King, Star Wars, Marvel, and other major franchises without permission.

Disney’s legal notice accuses Google of “massive” copyright infringement, stating that the tech giant is commercially profiting from its intellectual property and even that some AI outputs bear Google branding, potentially misleading consumers into thinking the content is licensed.

Following Disney’s warning, Google made the videos unavailable across its platforms. A Google spokesperson said the company relies on public web data to build its AI systems and continues to work with Disney, pointing to existing copyright controls like Content ID on YouTube to help rights holders manage their material. The takedowns come amid broader scrutiny of how generative AI models handle copyrighted content from fictional characters to film footage, and what obligations major tech firms have to rights holders.

Meanwhile: Disney Strikes Major AI Deal With OpenAI

In a striking contrast to its legal Google Disney AI, Disney announced a $1 billion licensing agreement and strategic investment in OpenAI, enabling the AI firm’s Sora video generator and ChatGPT Images to officially use more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters. Under the three-year pact, users will be able to generate short, text-prompted AI videos featuring Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Iron Man, Elsa, Darth Vader, and dozens more with licensing consent, though actor likenesses and voice performances are explicitly excluded. Disney also plans to host curated user-generated Sora videos on its Disney+ streaming service and will adopt OpenAI tools internally.

Analysts say the simultaneous legal pressure on Google and partnership with OpenAI illustrates Disney’s dual strategy: protecting its intellectual property while selectively embracing AI platforms that agree to licensed usage terms. OpenAI’s Sora app has struggled to gain traction compared to rivals, but Disney’s involvement could boost its visibility and provide a controlled environment where creators and rights holders are compensated, a major industry concern. The battle also underscores a broader clash in Hollywood and Silicon Valley over how generative AI should treat creative works, sparking new legal and commercial frameworks that could reshape media rights in the digital age.
