Why does a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup make such fantastic comfort food? At The Edison Disney Springs, this classic combination isn’t just a quick lunch; it’s an elevated experience. While many associate this pairing with childhood, its roots align perfectly with The Edison’s Prohibition-era theme.

The pairing emerged in the early 20th century and gained popularity between the Great Depression and the post-World War II period. Originally valued for its pragmatic, economical nature, the “toasted cheese” sandwich became a staple military ration. When paired with tomato soup, coveted for its Vitamin C content, it became an American icon. This dish represents a rapidly industrializing nation: Kraft’s processed cheese (1916), sliced bread (1928), and canned tomato soup (1897) all converged to reshape the American diet.

So, how does a table-service restaurant at Walt Disney World handle such a humble staple? They elevate it to justify the $23 price tag.

The Sandwich: A Multi-Cheese Masterpiece

The Tomato Soup & Gooey Grilled Cheese at The Edison is available on both the lunch and dinner menus. This isn’t your basic kitchen-table sandwich. The current iteration features a blend of:

  • Sharp Cheddar
  • American
  • Alpine Swiss
  • Provolone

These are melted between thick slices of toasted sourdough encrusted with Parmesan for an extra salty crunch. While previous versions featured fontina or Muenster, the current four-cheese blend remains a crowd-pleaser. For those looking to customize, you can add tomato, onion, or bacon for an additional charge.

Is It Worth It At The Edison Disney Springs?

During our visit, the bread was perfectly toasted and buttery, providing the structural integrity needed to hold the gooey, melted interior. The selection of cheeses offered a subtle sweetness that balanced the acidity of the tomato soup.

Speaking of the soup, it is easily one of the better soups we’ve had at Walt Disney World. It’s rich, nostalgic, and deep in flavor. However, for the ultimate Disney soup fans, we have to be honest: while this is a top-tier contender, we still slightly prefer the tomato soup found at Primo Piatto. Still, being objective, most guests will prefer The Edison Disney Springs version of tomato soup.

While we have some concerns about the portion size, this sandwich tends not to disappoint. At $23, it is a premium price for a childhood favorite, but with Walt Disney World annual pass discounts and the immersive atmosphere of The Edison, it’s a worthy indulgence for those seeking elevated comfort.

The Edison Disney Springs

The Edison Disney Springs is a premier “Industrial Gothic” dining and entertainment destination located in The Landing area of the complex. Designed to resemble an abandoned 1920s power plant, the multi-level space features seven distinct areas, including the Tesla Lounge and the Patent Office. Its steampunk-inspired aesthetic, complete with 35-foot ceilings and vintage machinery, provides a cinematic backdrop for both casual lunches and high-energy evenings.

The menu focuses on elevated American classics. Beyond the signature Tomato Soup and Gooey Grilled Cheese, standout items include the DB “Clothesline” Candied Bacon and the Edison Burger, a custom blend of sirloin, short rib, and brisket. The beverage program is equally ambitious, featuring “Edison’s Elixirs,” inventive zero-proof cocktails, and a deep selection of bourbons and absinthes.
