SeaWorld’s zoological and rescue operations have officially crossed an important historic SeaWorld rescue milestone. The company announced that its SeaWorld Rescue teams have officially taken over the organization’s long history. This major milestone emphasizes the ongoing and urgent need to protect wildlife in our oceans and coastal communities.

SeaWorld Rescue Milestone Reached: From the Beaches to the Storm Drains

The 24/7/365 rescue operations spanning parks in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio are constantly active. Just early this May, the San Diego team took in six birds alongside a young, orphaned California sea lion pup discovered on the back stairs of a Carlsbad, California beach house. The female pup, nearly a year old, arrived emaciated and dehydrated. She is currently receiving fluids and formula at the SeaWorld Rescue Center while learning to eat fish on her own alongside other rescued pups.

Meanwhile, SeaWorld Orlando continues to run the largest manatee rescue operation in the United States, utilizing a five-acre critical care center that can accommodate up to 60 manatees at once. One of the standout success stories from earlier this year includes Melby, a manatee found trapped inside a storm drain in Melbourne Beach, Florida. After being treated for cold stress and gaining more than 100 pounds during rehabilitation at SeaWorld Orlando, Melby was successfully released back into his natural habitat on April 7.

A Dedicated Network of Care

The staggering 43,000+ animals saved since SeaWorld’s very first rescue of a beached Dall’s porpoise in 1965 include everything from aquatic birds and sea turtles to manatees, whales, dolphins, and otters. Every single operation is conducted in close partnership with local, state, and national authorities like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“Our rescue teams, like all of our zoological professionals, are made up of compassionate and skilled animal care specialists who devote countless hours to helping animals in need,” said Dr. Chris Dold, chief zoological officer at United Parks & Resorts, SeaWorld’s parent company. “Rescue and rehabilitation can save the lives of individual animals, and in some cases supports the preservation of endangered and threatened species, like the Florida manatee. That is why we do this work, and why it is so important for accredited zoos and aquariums like ours to continue efforts to help animals that cannot survive on their own.”

SeaWorld rescue milestone

While the primary objective of SeaWorld Rescue is always rehabilitation and release, some animals suffer from health conditions that make survival in the wild impossible. In those scenarios, federal wildlife authorities determine if an animal is non-releasable.

For these animals, accredited facilities provide permanent, long-term care. Visitors to the parks can view these residents firsthand, including the non-releasable sea turtles at each park and the five southern sea otters at SeaWorld San Diego, originally rescued through the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s conservation program. These habitats allow the public to connect with wildlife and learn about the real-world environmental challenges these species face. A portion of every single ticket and in-park purchase made at the parks goes directly toward funding these vital rescue, rehabilitation, conservation efforts, and helps with these important SeaWorld rescue milestone achievements.
