Heading Back Home: SeaWorld Orlando Returns Nine Rehabilitated Green Sea Turtles to the Atlantic Ocean

Following a harsh winter, a SeaWorld Orlando sea turtle rescue effort saved and rehabilitated nine green sea turtles and returned them to the ocean.
There is nothing quite like watching marine wildlife return to where they belong. This week, the Atlantic Ocean welcomed back nine very special residents. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the SeaWorld Orlando Rescue Team, nine rehabilitated green sea turtles were successfully returned to their natural habitat at the River to Sea Preserve in Marineland, located in Flagler County.
This major milestone is the culmination of months of intense, around-the-clock veterinary care. The journey for these turtles began during an unusually cold Florida winter, which created dangerous conditions for local marine life.
Sea Turtle Rescue: Overcoming the Chill and Cold Stress

When temperatures drop drastically, sea turtles face a dangerous condition known as cold stress or cold-stunning. Since they are ectothermic (cold-blooded), they rely on the external environment to regulate their body temperature. When water temperatures plunge below 50°F (10°C), their heart rates and metabolisms slow down dramatically.
This leaves them lethargic, unable to swim, and floating helplessly on the surface. In this state, they cannot forage for food, leading to severe malnutrition and leaving them highly vulnerable to predators, boat strikes, and disease.
Most of the nine green sea turtles rescued by the SeaWorld Orlando team were suffering from these exact symptoms. Upon arrival at SeaWorld’s advanced rehabilitation facility, the veterinary staff immediately went to work. The recovery process required a highly customized approach for each patient:
- Advanced Diagnostics: Running bloodwork and physical exams to gauge internal organ health.
- Nutritional Support: Administering carefully balanced diets and fluids to counteract severe malnutrition and dehydration.
- Targeted Therapies: One turtle required extensive shell repair to heal from physical trauma.
Thanks to this unwavering care, these resilient animals regained their strength, passed their health clearances, and were finally deemed ready to make their triumphant journey back home.
A Banner Year for Marine Conservation

The sea turtle rescue highlights a much larger, ongoing effort to preserve Florida’s vulnerable marine ecosystems. Year-to-date, SeaWorld Orlando has rescued 38 sea turtles and successfully returned 27 to the wild.

Every successful release is a victory for the species. Green sea turtles face numerous threats, from habitat loss to climate fluctuations, making localized rescue networks absolutely vital. The continued success of the SeaWorld Orlando Rescue Team serves as a beacon of hope for marine conservation, ensuring that these ancient, beautiful creatures can continue to thrive in our oceans for generations to come.
