The Moana live-action trailer drops with Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui and Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana—check out the latest details.

Disney has released the first official trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of Moana, offering fans a closer look at the reimagining of the 2016 animated hit. The trailer reveals fresh casting, updated visuals, and a more realistic take on the Polynesian story.
Moana Live-Action Trailer: New Faces, Familiar Spirit
Catherine Lagaʻaia steps into the role of Moana, bringing a new energy to the courageous wayfinder destined to save her island. While the character is familiar, Lagaʻaia’s performance adds a grounded, human quality that distinguishes the live-action adaptation from the original animated version.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns as the charismatic demigod Maui, reprising the role that fans instantly fell in love with. Johnson’s presence promises to retain the humor, charm, and larger-than-life personality that made Maui a fan favorite.
A More Realistic Adventure

The trailer showcases a visually stunning and more dangerous ocean, emphasizing the stakes of Moana’s journey. Co-writer Dana Ledoux Miller explained that the live-action format allows for “real human vulnerability” that wasn’t possible in animation, making Moana’s heroism feel more grounded. The film also continues Disney’s commitment to cultural authenticity, highlighting Polynesian traditions and storytelling with care.
“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said 17-year-old Laga‘aia. “My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”
John Tui will play Moana’s father Chief Tui, while Frankie Adams will play Moana’s mother Sina. Rena Owen also stars as Gramma Tala.
Release Date Update
Originally scheduled for June 27, 2025, the film has been delayed to July 10, 2026, giving Disney more time to refine the production and promotional strategy.
Moana Live-Action Trailer
The Moana live-action trailer marks an exciting next step in Disney’s trend of reimagining animated classics. With its updated visuals, new cast members, and a focus on realism and cultural authenticity, the film is shaping up to be a highly anticipated release for both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
