The robotic horror icon is back — but it seems M3GAN’s rebooted sequel may be losing a little steam. M3GAN 2.0, which debuted globally on June 27, is showing signs of struggle at the box office, opening to noticeably weaker numbers than its surprise-hit predecessor from 2023.
The sci-fi horror sequel centers on the relaunch of the AI doll M3GAN, this time upgraded to take on a new threat: a militarized android named AMELIA. The film sees the return of Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, joined by new cast members Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jemaine Clement, Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, and the dual performers behind M3GAN herself — Amie Donald and Jenna Davis.
M3GAN 2.0 Slow Box Office Numbers
While the original M3GAN debuted to a shocking $30.4 million in its domestic opening weekend and rode a viral marketing wave to $180 million globally, M3GAN 2.0 is expected to bring in just $10.2 million domestically and $17 million worldwide, according to Variety. That’s a significant dip for the franchise, especially given the sequel’s higher expectations and expanded sci-fi scope.
Despite the stumble, Universal Pictures is far from out of the summer box office conversation. Their next major release, Jurassic World Rebirth, is already generating big buzz ahead of its July 3rd release. The seventh entry in the prehistoric franchise hopes to bring in between $100 million and $125 million over the extended Fourth of July weekend.
For comparison, 2015’s Jurassic World roared into theaters with a colossal $208 million opening, while 2018’s Fallen Kingdom and 2022’s Dominion followed closely behind at $148 million and $145 million respectively — and those were all over standard three-day weekends. Rebirth, on the other hand, is taking advantage of the five-day stretch to build momentum and reach new audiences.
It’s a tale of two blockbusters — one struggling to find its spark, and one preparing to stomp its way back into box office dominance. Whether M3GAN 2.0 can recover in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but all eyes now turn to the dinosaurs as the summer movie season marches on.
