Florida Citrus Meets Dark Chocolate: A Review of the July Orange Pecan Chocolate Cake at Gideon’s Bakehouse

We review the limited-time Orange Pecan Chocolate Cake from Gideon’s Bakehouse. Find out how this $12 Florida citrus slice stacks up against other flavors.

A brand-new month has arrived at Walt Disney World, and for dessert lovers, that means an essential trip to Disney Springs. The July 2026 menu at Gideon’s Bakehouse has officially dropped, bringing a wave of refreshing summer flavors, exclusive merchandise, and limited-time treats to the beautifully gothic bakery.

Among the mid-summer arrivals is the return of Stuart’s signature profile. While the popular Orange Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookie is only sticking around from July 1st to July 10th, its cake counterpart is here to hold down the fort all month long. Available exclusively on Wednesdays and Saturdays, we dropped by to grab a slice of the Orange Pecan Chocolate Cake.

Before diving into the flavor profile, it is worth noting a recent change for those planning their budget. Cake slices at Gideon’s Bakehouse now cost $12 a slice. With the price creeping up, expectations are higher than ever for these massive, near-half-pound portions.
So, how does this July exclusive stack up? While it is a very good dessert, we ultimately found it to be good but not one of our absolute favorites from this legendary bakery. Here is our full breakdown of the experience.
The Gideon’s Bakehouse Orange Pecan Chocolate Cake Flavor Profile: Chocolate vs. Citrus

Gideon’s Bakehouse describes this limited-time offering as a three-layer chocolate cake smothered in dark orange chocolate buttercream, coated with chocolate chips, candied pecans, and candied orange.
[Layer 1: Classic Dark Chocolate Cake Base]
↓ (Rich, Moist, Decadent)
[Layer 2: Dark Orange Chocolate Buttercream]
↓ (Heavy Chocolate, Subtle Citrus Finish)
[Layer 3: Crunchy Texture Topping]
(Chocolate Chips, Candied Pecans, Candied Orange)
The foundation of this dessert is where the bakery completely shines. The classic chocolate cake base was excellent as always. It delivers that signature, incredibly rich, moist, and dense texture that makes Gideon Bakehouse’s cakes famous across Central Florida. If you love their standard chocolate cake layers, you will not be disappointed by the consistency here.
Dark Orange Chocolate Buttercream
The real wildcard is the frosting. The dark orange chocolate buttercream was superb, but we noticed it leans much heavier on the chocolate side than the orange side. Instead of an equal partnership between citrus and cocoa, it feels like a rich chocolate frosting with a subtle, bright orange finish.

Since the buttercream is so chocolate-forward, the candied pecans and candied oranges play a secondary role. They add a nice textural crunch and a sweet pop when you get them in a bite, but they do not quite cut through the heavy chocolate dominance as much as we hoped.
Fans of dark chocolate-covered orange slices will thoroughly enjoy this Florida citrus cake. It beautifully mimics that nostalgic flavor profile. However, if you are expecting a punchy, vibrant citrus dessert to beat the summer heat, the heavy chocolate richness might overwhelm what you are looking for.

At the new $12 price point, it remains a high-quality, shareable treat, but it doesn’t quite dethrone some of the more distinct seasonal cake slices in the bakery’s rotation. If you want to pair it with an extra kick of citrus, consider ordering Stuart’s Orange Mocha Nitro Cold Brew alongside it to round out the experience.
