Disney R2-D2 Auction

This is a monumental moment for theme park historians and the galaxy’s biggest collectors. A piece of Disney and Star Wars history is going up for auction,. A piece of Walt Disney World history is officially rolling onto the auction block, and it is a “big deal” for anyone who spent the late ’90s and early 2000s at Disney-MGM Studios. Animazing Galley and Goldin have partnered to present an Original Fully Operational R2-D2 Robot for public auction, marking the first time this specific unit has ever been available to the public.

The Ultimate Collectible: A Disney Parks Icon

This isn’t just a static statue; this is a museum-level artifact built in 1997 for Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios). Approved by Lucasfilm Ltd., this droid has a long history of making fans smile.

“This exceptional R2-D2 unit was originally built in 1997 for Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) at Walt Disney World in Florida. Approved by Lucasfilm Ltd., it made its debut during Star Wars Weekends before operating daily in the beloved ‘Stars and Motorcars’ parade, along with additional guest interactions throughout the park.”

The Details: “Galaxy-Traveled” Authenticity

Constructed of cast fiberglass and resin, this R2-D2 is a fully functioning robotic character. It measures approximately 41 x 37 x 21 inches and features:

  • Remote-Controlled Motion: He can actually roll just like in the films!
  • Rotating Dome: The classic 360-degree head movement.
  • Light-up Electronics: Authentic flashing lights to signal he’s hard at work.
  • Iconic Sounds: He produces the same expressive beeps and whistles fans know worldwide.

While he shows “expected signs of park use,” he is in very good operational condition and includes a remote control, a letter of provenance from the consignor, and a Certificate of Authenticity from Goldin.

Disney R2-D2 Auction: The Legacy of the Astromech

R2-D2 is the heart of the saga. Originally conceptualized by Ralph McQuarrie and portrayed by Kenny Baker, he appeared in 10 of the 11 Star Wars films. Whether he was delivering the plea—”Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope—or bickering with C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), R2-D2 remains cinema’s most beloved droid.
