The newest hero of the high seas has arrived. A spectacular Disney Destiny christening celebration unfolded at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Monday evening to officially welcome the Disney Cruise Line’s latest vessel, the Disney Destiny.
Billed as a “hero’s welcome,” the event was an astonishing fusion of a high-energy pop-rock concert and a signature Disney spectacular. The waterfront production featured a multi-tiered set, dazzling drone special effects, and scenic projections that lit up the ship itself. The custom musical arrangement, which included iconic tracks from Hercules, The Lion King, Frozen, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, honored the legendary Disney, Pixar, and Marvel stories guests will experience onboard.
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney experiences, addressed the crowd, noting, “Disney Cruise Line is a powerful part of that legacy because our ships become brand ambassadors that travel the globe and bring joy to our guests in ways only Disney can. Now, the Disney Destiny makes its own extraordinary entry into our growing fleet.”
Susan Egan Presides Over the Disney Destiny Christening
The ceremony’s emotional peak arrived as Susan Egan, the ship’s godmother, bestowed the ceremonial christening blessing. Egan is a perfect choice, embodying the spirit of the ship with her indelible connection to Disney’s heroes: she lent her distinctive voice to the witty Megara in Hercules and originated the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. With a sparkling pop of champagne, the Disney Destiny was officially ready to set sail!
“The Disney Cruise Line team, alongside our Disney Imagineers, have invested years of their expertise, creativity and dedication into this beautiful ship,” emphasized Joe Schott, President of Disney Signature Experiences.
What Awaits Aboard the Disney Destiny
The Disney Destiny, a sister ship to the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, is designed around the captivating legacy of legendary heroes and villains. This theme is woven throughout the ship’s exciting offerings:
- Entertainment: An original, Broadway-style adaptation of “Hercules” will anchor the main theater’s offerings.
- Dining: Guests can enjoy immersive dining experiences inspired by “The Lion King” and the Marvel Universe.
- Lounges: One-of-a-kind lounges are themed to beloved antagonists and heroes, including Cruella de Vil and Doctor Strange.
- Attractions: Highlights include a Mickey Mouse-themed water attraction, imaginative kids’ clubs, and the signature fireworks at sea.
Setting Sail and Growing the Fleet
The Disney Destiny will embark on its maiden voyage on November 20, followed by an inaugural season of four- and five-night cruises to The Bahamas and the Western Caribbean. All sailings will depart from the ship’s new year-round homeport at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, which opened DCL’s newest terminal in November 2023.
The Disney Destiny christening also marks a significant step in Disney Cruise Line’s massive multi-year expansion, which will see the fleet grow to 13 ships by 2031. Future plans include the Disney Adventure homeporting in Singapore (March 2026), a fourth Wish-class ship (2027), a brand-new class of ships (2029), and an agreement to introduce Disney cruise vacations to Japan in 2029.
In honor of the launch, Disney Cruise Line is also introducing the “Discover Your Destiny” initiative, which inspires students in Florida and the Bahamas through the arts by offering a behind-the-scenes look at entertainment careers on a cruise ship.
