Butterfinger Doughnut Review: Voodoo Doughnut Universal CityWalk Orlando

Is the Butterfinger Doughnut at Voodoo Doughnut in Universal CityWalk Orlando worth $3.00? Get the price, calories, pros, cons, and our verdict.

“Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger.” That was Bart Simpson’s warning to America’s candy thieves, and it doesn’t extend to Universal Orlando, where Springfield, U.S.A., sits a short walk from a pink building that will happily sell you a Butterfinger Doughnut. Bart would be furious. Bart would also, let’s be honest, be first in line.
Today we’re reviewing the Butterfinger Doughnut at Voodoo Doughnut in Universal CityWalk Orlando. It costs $3.00. It has 360 calories and is one of the more approachable options on a menu that also includes a doughnut shaped like a voodoo doll and a fritter topping 1,800 calories.
What Is the Butterfinger Doughnut?

According to Universal Orlando’s own menu, the Butterfinger Doughnut is a chocolate cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and Butterfinger crumbles. It sits in the Devil’s Food Cake section alongside the Double Chocolate, Chocolate Coconut Cake, and Diablos Rex. There is no filling, no pretzel stake, and no creepy candy eyeballs. It’s a cake doughnut, frosting, and candy, and it knows exactly what it is.
It is also one of the originals. The Butterfinger Doughnut was on the menu when Voodoo Doughnut opened at CityWalk in 2018 with a price of $1.95. By January 2023, it had climbed to $2.10, and it now sits at $3.00.
Butterfinger Doughnut Price, Calories, and Allergens

| Item | Price | Calories | Universal allergen tags |
| Butterfinger Doughnut | $3.00 | 360 | FS, SES, SFS, TNS |
For comparison, the Portland Cream is 610 calories, Oh Captain, My Captain is 410, and the Diablos Rex is 410. The Butterfinger is a lighter pick than most of the specialty lineup, which is a sentence we did not expect to type about a candy bar doughnut.
A note on allergens: Butterfinger candy centers on a peanut butter core. Universal’s menu listing for this doughnut does not show a PS (Peanut Sensitive) tag, but Universal also states that all bakery items are made in a facility where cross-contamination with gluten, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts is possible.
A Very Brief History of the Butterfinger
Otto Schnering invented the Butterfinger in 1923 at the Curtiss Candy Company near Chicago, and the name came from a public contest. Schnering was a marketing machine. Among his stunts, the company dropped Butterfinger and Baby Ruth bars out of airplanes over American cities. Nothing says “premium confection” like a candy bar arriving at terminal velocity.
The candy has changed hands many times since then, moving from Curtiss to Standard Brands, Nabisco, Nestlé, and finally Ferrero in 2018, where it lives today under the Ferrara Candy Company.
Voodoo Doughnut at Universal CityWalk Orlando

Voodoo Doughnut began in Portland, Oregon, and its CityWalk shop was the brand’s first location east of the Mississippi. Founders Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon attended the opening, and Universal launched the shop in 2018 with more than 50 doughnut varieties.
You’ll find it right next to NBC Sports Grill & Brew on the path toward Universal Studios Florida, and the big pink wall makes it hard to miss. CityWalk hours are currently 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. You can find the full doughnut lineup on Universal Orlando’s official Voodoo Doughnut menu page.

What Works
The vanilla frosting and Butterfinger crumbles make a pleasant flavor combination. The crumbles also avoid the texture problem Butterfinger can have, where the candy turns too rough and hard. The cake’s chocolate flavor works without overwhelming the other components. When you prepare it properly, the Butterfinger candy forms a layer over the vanilla frosting, giving the doughnut a solid topping.
What Does Not
The cake doughnut base often tastes too dry. I am not the only guest who has said so, and it remains the most common criticism of this doughnut.
Consistency is the other issue. The toppings at this location often lose moisture too quickly and end up tasting stale, and the amount of candy varies from day to day. One visit might give you a doughnut covered in Butterfinger, while another leaves you with half the candy missing. Our own luck has leaned toward the ones that need more candy on top, so your mileage may vary.
| Pros | Cons |
| Vanilla frosting and Butterfinger crumbles pair well | Cake base often tastes too dry |
| Crumbles avoid a rough, hard texture | Candy topping amount is inconsistent |
| Chocolate flavor does not overwhelm | Toppings can go stale and lose moisture |
| Only 360 calories and $3.00 | Price is up more than 50 percent since 2018 |
Is the Butterfinger Doughnut Worth $3.00?

Here is the value story. The Butterfinger Doughnut went from $1.95 in 2018 to $2.10 in 2023 to $3.00 today, a jump of more than 50 percent in about eight years. That is faster than most of us would like, but $3.00 is still one of the lower prices on the specialty side of the menu. The Portland Cream is $4.25, the ODB is $4.75, and the Voodoo Doll is $5.25.
Our verdict: It is a nice, sweet treat or a quick breakfast, and Butterfinger fans should enjoy it. Go in knowing the cake can run dry and the candy topping is a bit of a lottery. If you want a doughnut with a little more wow factor, the Voodoo Doll or Portland Cream are better showpieces. If you want a recognizable candy flavor for $3.00, this one does the job. As always, eat like you mean it.
