Avengers: Doomsday delayed to December 2026, with Secret Wars pushed to 2027, as Marvel reduces film output under Disney’s new strategy.

Avengers: Doomsday Delayed

Marvel Studios has delayed “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” This means an official Avengers movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga will not arrive on schedule.

Avengers: Doomsday Delayed

In March, Marvel Studios broadcast a mysterious live video to announce many of the cast members for “Avengers: Doomsday.” That Avengers movie will bring the Fox original X-Men to the franchise, see the Fantastic Four arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and introduce Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. However, “Avengers: Doomsday” will now debut on Dec. 18, 2026, instead of the originally slated May 1, 2026. To match, the follow-up “Avengers: Secret Wars” will release on Dec. 17, 2027, instead of May 7, 2027.

Disney announced “Avengers” delays and several other changes, like reorganizing its upcoming theatrical slate. For example, the new release slate sees the studio remove several unannounced Marvel titles. The date of Feb. 13, 2026, previously slotted for an “Untitled Marvel” project, has been removed from the schedule. Also, the dates of Nov. 6, 2026, and Nov. 5, 2027, previously set for “Untitled Marvel” features have been altered to “Untitled Disney” films. With those changes, “Avengers: Doomsday” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” are now the only Marvel Cinematic Universe films set to hit theaters in 2026.

In addition, no theatrical Marvel features are slated to release between “The Fantastic 4: First Steps” on July 25 and the fourth MCU “Spider-Man” installment on July 31, 2026. That marks the biggest gap between Marvel Cinematic Universe feature films since the Covid-era period between 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and 2021’s “Black Widow.”

This reduction in Marvel Studios films fits with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recently articulated strategy for the company’s superhero features. During an investor call, Iger shared that Marvel Studios had “lost a little focus by making too much” between its tentpoles and various Disney+ series. He continued, “By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality.”
