D23 Reveals More About Piston Peak National Park — Here’s Everything Coming to Magic Kingdom’s New Frontierland Area
Disney Imagineering showed more of the mountain. Here are the details from the Piston Peak D23 reveal…both attractions, the model, and the sightline issues talk.
Rivers of America has been gone for over a year now, and so far Disney has asked fans to fill that void with little more than a concept art map and the occasional permit filing. That changed this weekend at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Imagineering finally rolled out a 19-by-19-foot scale model of Piston Peak National Park. Also, for the first time, they put real detail behind the land’s long-rumored second attraction.
At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney officially announced new details about high-octane attractions and spectacular scenery coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. Taking to the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress stage at D23 2026 to share the news were Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative for Walt Disney World and Imagineer Jason Grandt.
Piston Peak D23: The Model
The centerpiece of the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion this year is, quite literally, a mountain. Disney’s Piston Peak D23 model depicts the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island footprint reworked into a snow-capped, red-rock national park, viewable from multiple angles the pavilion built specifically to answer the internet’s most-asked question about this project: what happens to the view from Liberty Square? According to Imagineering, protecting that sightline was a defined design constraint from day one, and the model backs it up. The mountain massing sits behind and beyond the Liberty Square tree line rather than crowding it.
From the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure side, guests will be able to see clear across the water to Piston Peak’s snow-covered peak with Liberty Square visible just past it. This means the land has been designed to be looked at from three directions at once, not just experienced from inside its own queue.
Attraction One: The Rally Race
The land’s marquee attraction remains an off-road rally ride through the mountain, and the new model fills in exactly what that means in practice. Guests board open-air, four-person vehicles, each with its own personality, in true Cars fashion, and spend the bulk of the route circling the perimeter of the mountain itself: climbing trails, dodging geysers, and, to keep Mater happy, splashing through a mudhole or two. Imagineering has carefully framed this as a new story set outside Radiator Springs rather than a Florida clone of Disney California Adventure’s Radiator Springs Racers, and the terrain in the model backs that up. This is park- architecture and red rock, not desert highway in Frontierland.
The queue introduces an entirely new original character: Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, a car-ified riff on Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore, the human park ranger who’s popped up in Disney shorts since the 1950s and still lends his name to Fort Wilderness’s Wilderness Lodge cousin, Woodlore. It’s a deep-cut Easter egg wearing a very shiny new paint job. During the Piston Peak D23 discussion, fans learned more about the new main attraction.
Cars Ridge Run Rally Announced During Piston Peak D23 Discussion
Further details were also revealed around Piston Peak’s previously announced racing attraction. Imagineer Jason Grandt introduced the crowd to Cars Ridge Run Rally and described the experience as a quest to find “the wildest racer in the wheelderness” as they compete for the “fastest lap in the west.”
The course will take racers through the rugged beauty of America’s national parks, including a climb up Piston Peak itself, where an icy, snow-covered mountaintop awaits. Jason shared that he’s especially excited to experience the frosty summit at night. After reaching the top, racers will plummet down for a camelback descent and later navigate an exhilarating geyser field. The race ends by circling the Old Tankfull geyser before a sprint to the finish line, where Lightning McQueen and Mater are covering the race live on Racing Sports Network.
Cars Ridge Run Rally will debut a completely new ride vehicle, designed not to simulate an off-road car, but to be one. Michael explained that the attraction design is unlike typical theme park systems, promising that guests will “feel every bump, drop, and rock because this vehicle’s tires and suspension are truly driving over and reacting to them.” Progress is already “fully underway” and Michael described the visible updates as “Imagineering in the round,” for a racing experience unlike anything else in the world.
Attraction Two: Miss Fritter Gets Her Own Ride
The second attraction had been a mystery since it was first teased. Disney would only say it was aimed at younger guests and “fun for the whole family.” That changed during Piston Peak D23 discussions. The second attraction coming to Piston Peak was announced: Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along.
The ride will star Miss Fritter, the demolition-derby school bus scene-stealer from Cars 3, in what Imagineers are describing as a compact spinning attraction built around her demolition-derby persona. Model art shown alongside the presentation leans hard into a Fritter Time-style layout, complete with a goat-cart motif worked into the land’s marquee signage. If you’ve seen Cars 3, you already know exactly the kind of joke this franchise loves to hide in plain sight. Inspired by the “Diva of Demolition” from Cars 3, Michael announced that the ride will feature Miss Fritter as a “huge school-bus-sized animatronic” who hosts a stampeding bash at her “wildest demolition derby yet.”
Also, for anyone bracing for an overflow queue eating into Liberty Square during busy periods, a real and frequently discussed concern, Imagineering confirmed the space behind the rally ride’s queue is not being used for additional overflow queuing or a themed lounge, as some fans had speculated. What’s there instead wasn’t fully detailed, but the model suggests it’s simply more mountain.
The Research Behind the Rocks
Imagineering also used its Piston Peak D23 presentation to walk through the land’s creative development, built around four stated pillars: introducing new attractions to Frontierland, building a new adventure inside the world of Cars, delivering both family thrills and family fun, and balancing excitement with humor. The team says it drew directly from a research trip to Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. That includes the trail systems, red rock formations, native vegetation, and actual park architecture all made it into presentation boards alongside classic Frontierland reference points, tying Piston Peak’s new mountain back to the land it’s replacing rather than treating it as a clean break.
Piston Peak D23: What We Still Don’t Know
We still lack an opening date for Piston Peak. During the Piston Peak D23 segment, Disney confirmed construction is well underway on a project it now calls part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history. Piston Peak alongside the neighboring Villains Land, which got its own D23 reveal this year in the form of themed tree sculpts previewing that area’s darker visual language. However, an opening timeline wasn’t part of this weekend’s news. Given the scale of what’s on the show floor, treat any specific year you see online as a guess dressed up as a leak.
