Goodbye to Disney’s Best Breakfast Value: Why the Ale & Compass Buffet Loss Hurts

Published by Jon Self on

Wondering if the Ale & Compass breakfast is still worth booking? We break down the menu changes and explain why losing the buffet enhancement really hurts.

There was once a shining, golden era at Walt Disney World. A time when rope-dropping Epcot didn’t require surviving on a lukewarm $6 granola bar from a stroller pocket. It was the era of the Ale & Compass breakfast buffet enhancement at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort.

If you were fortunate enough to experience it, you know what we mean. For years, Ale & Compass was the worst-kept “hidden gem” secret in Walt Disney World dining. You could order a full hot entree off the menu, and for just a few extra bucks, you unlocked access to the continental buffet spread. We’re talking unlimited warm biscuits, savory gravy, fresh pastries, fruit, house-made parfaits, and smoked salmon. It was practically a Disney miracle: high-end resort dining at a price that didn’t require putting a second mortgage on your house.

Then, Disney did what Disney so often does. They quietly showed the buffet enhancement the exit door. Now, if you book a reservation for the Ale & Compass breakfast, you are stuck strictly with standard a la carte pricing. And while the cozy, nautical-chic dining room is still pleasant, losing that legendary buffet spread fundamentally changes the math. Without the buffet enhancement, Ale & Compass drops from an elite “must-do value play” to “just another hotel breakfast where you pay $17 for eggs.”

The Great Value Loss: RIP Continental Buffet

Let’s be honest: nobody goes to Walt Disney World looking for a budget vacation, but finding true value used to feel like winning a mini-lottery. The buffet enhancement was that winning ticket. It allowed big eaters to load up for a long day at Epcot, while letting lighter eaters graze on pastries and fruit while someone else enjoyed a full steak and eggs.

Without that warm blanket of unlimited carbs and smoked salmon, every dish on the menu now has to stand entirely on its own visual and culinary merits. Also, when you look at the receipt at the end of the meal without that bonus spread, it leaves a slightly sour aftertaste, and not the good kind you get from a key lime pie.

Is the Ale & Compass breakfast food bad? No, not at all. Still, when you are paying top-dollar à la carte prices at a Deluxe Resort, “pretty decent” doesn’t quite carry the same punch as “unbeatable bargain.”

Ale & Compass Breakfast: Is It Still Worth a Reservation?

Dark Chocolate Waffles

If you’ve never experienced the original buffet enhancement, you might still enjoy a peaceful morning meal at Ale & Compass. The Dark Chocolate Waffle remains a sweet tooth’s dream, and the Crab Cake Benedict brings solid coastal flavors.

However, for those of us who remember pouring gravy over freshly baked biscuits while awaiting our main plate, the current experience feels stripped of its charm. Without that unmatched value proposition, you might find a better morning atmosphere or bigger portions just a short walk away at Boardwalk or inside Epcot itself. Walt Disney World gave us a taste of breakfast perfection, and taking it away leaves us hungry for the good old days.
