As excitement grows for the Harry Potter HBO series, fans are curious about the perspective of the original films’ director, Chris Columbus. Known for directing the first two Harry Potter films, Columbus recently shared his thoughts on the reboot, reflecting on his legacy, the original cast, and the ongoing controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling.
Harry Potter HBO series
In a recent interview, Columbus confirmed he will not participate in the Harry Potter HBO series. He explained that his work in the Wizarding World is complete:
“No, I’ve done it, you saw my version. There’s nothing left for me to do in the world of Potter.”
Even though he is stepping away, Columbus expressed hope that the series will explore elements from the books previously cut from the films, including the mischievous Peeves and complex potion plots.

However, Columbus did express some concerns when seeing promotional images from the Harry Potter HBO Series. Chris Columbus has said pictures of Hagrid from the set left him wondering why J.K. Rowling‘s books are being adapted again. For example, about the Hagrid costume, he said, “So, I’m seeing these photographs … and he’s wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid. Part of me was like: What’s the point?” Columbus said. “I thought everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same. It’s all going to be the same.”
He continued: “It’s very flattering for me, because I’m like, that’s exactly the Hagrid costume that we designed. So, part of it is really exciting, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do with it. Part of it is sort of deja vu all over again.”
The Early Days of Harry Potter
Chris Columbus reflected on the early days of filming and the joys of working with young actors. He also praised Daniel Radcliffe’s growth and success, calling his Tony Award win “remarkable.” Fans of the Harry Potter HBO series can take comfort knowing that Columbus still cherishes the original films and the talent of its cast.
Addressing the J.K. Rowling Controversy
Columbus addressed the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, stating he disagrees with her views on transgender issues and finds the situation “very sad.” He emphasized the separation of the art from the artist, while making it clear thathe does not support her opinions.
Looking Ahead to the Harry Potter HBO series
The upcoming Harry Potter HBO series promises a faithful adaptation, with each season covering one of the seven novels. While Columbus will not be directly involved, his reflections provide insight into the legacy of the original films and the excitement surrounding this next chapter of the Wizarding World.
